Right then, when it rains it poors, just knackered my auto box, so deliberating whether to have it fixed or cut my looses and get the car scrapped. Anyway heres the thing, dont really mind having to pay out for another box to be put it in, but now i fear that somehow, maybe i have a turbo problem, when i start the car as i have been doing every other day, smoking a little on idle, but when i put the foot down and rev it a little, plenty of white smoke out the back. Is there any way i can tell for sure if i have a turbo problem, coz theres no point having the box redone or a man conv, if the tubs are knackered an all. Have no error codes on the ecu its 55. Oh the car has never done this before its only since the box went that it has started??? I dont really want to scrap the car but if turns out that i have turbos gone then i'll have to, the car is only a 1990 lwb 2+2 so i guess id have to cut my looses, although i must say this isnt really what i want, any advice would be greatly appreciated

Forgive me if this sounds completely stupid :wack: , but i thought i would mention it anyway, if the box is gone i am assuming it is stood, and maybe the white smoke is just condensation as it is getting colder now and the car is not being used. Just a suggestion probably dead wrong, but maybe it is something very simple.

yeah I know i was thinking that myself, but the smoke is pretty bad, and only when you rev the engine up

Does it still do it when it is fully warmed up?

I'm no expert but it is still probably something very simple, i can't imagine turbos just going all of a sudden, i was always told they start to smoke lightly when they are on there way out and go gradually, again i could be wrong.

Where's an expert when you need one! :p

tell me about it, i'm gonna go out and start the car and leave it to warm right up, then se what happens, will report back later, lol

oh dear. warmed the car right up and, water droplets from the exhaust pipes, with alot of white smoke still, gets worse upon reving the car up, then smoke/steam form the back centre of the engine bay looking from the front of the car. Also have noticed very very slight mayonaising on the oil cap, but it is hardly noticable, engine holds temperature ok, doesnt appear to overheat. Is the head gasket on its way????

Dont sound like turbos to me. White smoke/steam indicates water especially if you have water coming out the exhaust, sounds more like a head gasket with the mayonaising, is the car hard to start? I would get a compression test done

Sounds like headgasket with the mayo effect, water in the oil.

VERY rare for the HG to go between oil and waterways. You need to get a 'sniffer' on the coolant to check for combustion gases....

Mmm.. running the car on your drive to warm up will only produce more condensation in the exhaust than it is drying out! the exhaust system temperature required to clear what is already in and what is been produced at the same time requires you drive the car for at least 20 + miles AFTER it is warmed up, a typical car engine produces a litre of water vapour per mile and given the exhaust could already hold many times that, and given you have some water evidence in the oil I guess you either do short journeys ( when the car is in use ) or the engine is not getting up to the correct temperature when your driving usually caused by a faulty thermostat ( always open) or a missing one!.

Head gasket? I doubt it.

Turbo`s I doubt it.

Inspect before any decision to scrap, otherwise you may just regret it later

i take your point about the car producing water and it needind to be run to disipate, what would explain the steaming from the back of the engine bay??? read turbo coolant hose or matrix is around there. Well its going to SWZ next friday, so will let the chaps there find the prob
