This will get some of you fuming

means we are gonna get the police running round with sound meters

"Boy racers have until next July to get rid of modified exhaust pipes on their cars, under an EU directive on noise pollution.

The law which comes into effect next year will ban the exhausts as part of a range of measures aimed at reducing noise emissions.

But it's not yet clear how the government will enforce the rule, or whether drivers could face fines for having enlarged exhaust pipes.

Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins says it should be made part of the NCT test."

this is where the :xxx: smiley is handy....

Probally it's in a db range. I know bike cans have to be stamped "E" otherwise they are illegal and you cant get a MOT

by the way I dont know if thats true... I read it on another forum :)

(before I get stomped on)

you cant do any modification that effects emmisions and there aer a few other laws i believe one of them is about noise.

If it's true then it'll be completely unworkable. At the moment new car's exhausts have to be below a certian db at specific revs measured by driving past a fixed sound meter. Companies like Aston currently get round this by having active exhaust valves that open up above certain revs to make them louder. No way the police are gonna be able to do those tests on the road side with any degree of accuracy.

Like most of the laws coming out of the EU it's a load of horse sh*t. Like the whole child seat fiasco. All kids under a certain height must have a child seat or booster seat. But the Police have no power to measure children to enforce the law. So how the hell is any one gonna get fined!!!! Halfords neglected to point that out I noticed when they were advertising the change in the law to everyone to get them to buy a seat......

NCT test? That's the Irish (Southern) MOT. Probably won't apply to the UK as the UK doesn't follow all EU directive. In much the same way as cars in parts of Europe are not allowed any engine modifications.

Thats Eric ****ed then

Believe me! A lot of laws have been so slowly introduced they have hardly been noticed. Years ago there was a debate to introduce type approval on motorcycles in this country. It was put to the vote and the MCN got up a great big campain against it. As quick as it was suggested it was forgotten. Now my new Bike has it stamped on the log book and my new MG ZT had the same. Its got a type approval number. I dont think its acctually fully working in this country but the implications are that if a vehicle is manufactered with a certain tyre, exhaust or any part then to pass the MOT it must have that brand on the vehicle and if it hasnt then you have to pay what is basically a fine to keep it on the road? Now I might be wrong but I think this is a similar thing that they suffer in Japan and thats why we get such good cars here because it is so un economical to keep them in service over there after 5 years or so. It will come. They have been trying for years to do away with the custom bike scene.

only just read this, i wanted mine louder too!!

have the police not got anything better to do?

11 year olds getting shot, smack rats robbing asnd murdering the elderly, shootings, stabbings, drunken yobs mugging innocent folk and what laws get passed, "lets test the volume of everyones exhaust!!!

I thought that they had powers to take action over it already. they will just crack down on it more to pump in more revenue to make up for the 70k holidays and 25k on restaraunt bills footed by the tax payer that were totalled up by that the very man entrusted to make sure public money was being spent properly!

Is this country run by a complete set of fcuktards or what?

Yep it is an Irish Idea as fooking usual. Remember the smoking ban?! began here in 04 now in the UK, so you guys have got at least a 3 year head start. Craig David is correct in saying they are illegal, i've been stopped a few times at checkpoints and told by the way your exhaust is illegal and it's in my power to take.....blah blah blah...but they never do, no-one is quite sure what to do.

Unfortunately it's the messers in souped up novas and starlets tearing around street corners in the middle of the night which are going to make this stick eventually.

If any of the traders have any sense here they will be stockpiling oem z exhausts :( , gonna make a big kill on them in a couple of years.

Friggin El' just read this thread - my exhaust is STUUUUUPIDLY loud!!!! Luckily it was cheap, so if push comes to shove i will have to change it - i suppose its a good excuse to buy a proper good one, cos the one i have got now is for noise and noise only! lol

My Skyline is going to be a victim then. thats rather loud. Nice but loud.

Are they trying ot suck the fun out of motoring for me? :(

Any sentance with the words "fun" and "suck" together has got to be interesting listening? :)

Eh this one indeed is actually going to be law soon enough in the Rep of Ireland! But since i not only like the zeds and am into the "souped up Nova's and Starlets" i also happen to know that closer to the time it will be arranged that a awful lot of the modified car scene are going to protest in the middle of Dublin city by just driving in, stopping in the centre and just revving the modified exhausts for an hour or two just to cause chaos!! Yes the mini will be in there as the exhaust on it is quite loud!

Now that will do the cause no good what so ever?

The sentance that springs to mind is:

"Fighting for peace is like fookin for virginity"?
