Car looks fantastic, However a word of caution. I put down a 1K deposit on one, it was Black, with black windows BOSE Stereo system. Looked the business,Stunning. I then asked for them to put a CAT1 alarm on and all hell broke loose. the alarm screwed up the electrics for the engine management system. They tried for 2 weeks to fix it and couldn't. In the end the dealer said he couldn't sell it to me as i'd be back every 2 weeks with problems. In an attempt to put things right he said i could have any other car on the forecourt with 1K off the price. Thats how i came to own my 300Zx convertible.

So be careful if you plan to put a CAT1 alarm in.

ps When the CAT1 guys did the 300zx he said that the RX7's were known for giving trouble with CAT1 alarms

I think that would be down to poor alarm installer.

Leigh.

Personally I think it would too. The idea of the alarm is that is works independently from your car. All it uses is a feed from the power, and then have its own battery for when the car battery goes flat.

Well i'm no electrician, but i think a CAT1 is a full closure alarm in that it not only alarms the car but imobillises it. so some interaction with the engine management system/electrics must occur. I'm just giving you the benifit of my experience, not trying to put you off.

Find an installer who has done RX7's before is the morale of this story.

Hi Richie,

Thanks for the warning, and yes the Immobilser has too diarm at least 2 circuits.

Normally the igniton switch, and the starter motor low voltage side. A third circuit is the low voltage side of the ignition pack.

If the installer knows what he is doing shouldnt be a problem.

Leigh

hope It hasn't done ,more than 40,000 or you will be looking for an engine rebiulder before you come to sell it.

Quick but dodgey engines!

Not if you read up on the engines they dont need engine rebuilds quite as often as you think. Its just people who are jealous say they need engine rebuilds at 70k tongue.gif smile.gif

see ya

Yep,

You talk to any RX7 owner with the 3rd Generation, and they will tell you how reliable they are. Mazda resolved the problem with the tips wearing on the rotors.

Simple engine, less moving parts, makes for more reliablity.

As we say here at Nortel KISS:-

Keep It Simple Stupid.

Leigh

yeah thats all a load of kak.

They are great engines ffks the only jap engine to win lemans so it cant be all that bad.

One hell of a clever design.

and *apparently* mazda reccomend a redline every startup (obviously when up to temp etc! hehe) to prevent carbon buildup on the rotor tips! wahey! smile.gif

sweeet

see ya

funny that coz over half the RX-7's I get offered each week have the engines blown.

I even have some on my web site for sale

www.japanese-carimports.co.uk

Some of these are 95's with 45k. So much for 3rd gen engines.

well your into second hand cars so you would see that side, what about all the others that dont go bang.

At the end of the day how many 300s go bang because of lack of maintanence ect.

what you are saying is very broad based.

I mean how many reasons can there be for blowing an engine? Driver age ect there are many and as for the 45 k on the clock dont kid yourself lol. How ridiculous to think that cars 6-10 years old only have 45k on them. Dont kid yourself.

I've been on a 7 specialists website in this country. If the engine does go belly up it's best to uprate the rotor tips for stronger and I think larger ones?!?!?!?!?!

Also they don't like fully synthetic oil from what I can gather.

Rotor Motor is supposed to be very smooth though. wink.gif

I'd have one.

I know what you are saying and I agree to an extent..

But the fact is you don't get a lot of mileage for your wonga with RX-7's.

I wasn't realy aiming anything at Leigh's car, it looks great.

I'm talking in general.

I do ask myself why there are not that many RX-7's about?

they look great, go great so where are they?

As for 5-6yrs old car with 45k on the clock that is a fact too.

That is the whole piont of buying imports.

I have a '92 Z that looks new underneath with 100,000klm.

I would imagine that most of us with imported Z's bought them, partly because of the low mileage and condition for year.

Rick

PS if any of you want to check the mileage of a jap import go to www.bimta.com/mileage.htm

Yeah not looked into it, but the rotor design lends itself to mineral deposits from semi synth / multigrade. As there are well 'specced' semis, just cos its semi dont mean its cheap. heheh smile.gif

Two seater thing might put people off and the strange rotary engine.

Look what people are like coming on here and asking about what to look for when thinking about buying a Z...well imagine staring at that engine bay which isn't even a conventional engine! LOL biggrin.gif

I would have thought they are a piece of piss to work on and upgrade though, I was shocked at Billing last year seeing the various generations. Amount of free space in the engine bay...class! wink.gif

Were they still making 3rd Gen until recently? Like the GTO it seemed to survive longer than the Z and Soup. Stand to be corrected.
