New proud owner of a 1996Fairlady. Needs new rear tyres very soon. Tyre size is 225/45/17 intend to find out if a 245 would fit comfortably on the rim. the front tyres are yokohama and almost new. Was wondering what you guys thought was the best and any info you can give me.

hey stu

for starters it´s impossible to tell what width of tyre will fit on the rim from the info you´ve given ...look on the rim , should have a marking like " 8.5 J ..or 9.0 J etc ...from that you can assertain which tyres will fit on them.

As for Tyres, personally if I had almost brand new Yokohamas on the front I´d go for Yokohamas on the rear too

:)

id say from your username youve taken a trip to KTC just recently and bought that green smz shorty??

Whats it like?!

I really considered going to look and perhaps purchase it.... no money though :(

My wheels are Panasport Racing Super Rim System 17x9 JJ rear and 17x8 JJ front which has the yokohamas. Quavey bought the car at Keighley with a trade in. Think I got a good deal. It's built as a 2 seater car. Engine as sweet as a nut good oil preassure and when you floor it, it dont have kick. Top speed cuts out at 115mph yet loads of power left.

Thats just your Jap ecu limiting the speed! Nothing to worry about.

Yeah KTC = Keighly Trade Centre :)

It looked nice on the website! How do you mean doesnt have kick? It doesnt accelerate as you thought it would?

Meant dont half kick. Very quick really enjoy the car. Mind you got to think sharp when you start pushing it, great fun. Though wonder how long I shall avoid penalty points on licence.

I would go :

235 front.

265 or 285 rear

Goodyear F1's Toyo Proxies and Falken 452's are popular choices.

p.s remove that limiter and you can expect to see aover 170 !

A pig to fix on the 1996 model, unless you fit the earlier ECU though.

Thanks all of you for info, as a new Z driver it all helps. What a car! Had 3 litre cars before but nothing like this! But today mundane job with skreen washer. rear working can hear pump working off side front but front skreen dead. Bit of a job getting to the underside of the skreen wash tank and being on my owne didn't help. never mind shall be another day. Legrath says remove limiter. I'm all for that. But AndyP says it's a pig off a job. Need to find some one local to help me , or it's expensive bills at my nearest Nissan garage when I can manage it.

Welcome to the nut house buddy.

Of course we want to see some photos.

I'm sure if you talk to Andy nicely he may be able to sort out your ECU for you. He sorted mine for me. Can make a lot of difference. It is embarrassing when you hit the limiter and have to pull over to let that pratt of a BMW driver go buy.

Do a search for tyres. You will get lots of hits.

Good luck with it.

Darrell

235/45/ 17's up front and 355/45 17's or 265/40/ 17's on the Rear so that the rolling radius is correct. I think 285 would be too big for 9J and would most likely fowl the arches.

The best tyre you can buy IMO and I'd had 4 Z's and 8 years experience of them is doing about 220000 mile spread between em.

Bridgestone S02's

Next to that Mitchelin Pilots

Then Perrelli Rosso's or Goodyear F1s

The rest are buget tyre down to Grade 1 ditch or as i discovered Tree finders.

P.S. Don't let your Nissan dealer near it. It will cost you a fortune and 99.99% of them have no clue about them. They were only sold in the UK for 5 years. Late 89 to Nov 94. Less than 1500 ever sold as UK cars and only nominated Dealerships had mechanics trained to work on them. most of those mechanic's have moved on.

Bridgestone S02's

Ahhh yes the SO2. A brilliant tyre, even in the wet.

Will let you know how Yokohama A048's go when I fit them

We get plenty of Wet here which is why I think they are the best tyre to have on ya Z. Though the best gripping dry tyre I've ever had on my Z was Yokohama's. Very scarey in the wet though.

Thanks guys very interesting. AS I have good yokohamas 225/45/17 on 8" J front, had thought about yokohama 265/45/17 0n the 9" J rear think it shouid clear wheel arch. But why according to you MarkZX should the profile be 40 for the rear to keep the rolling radius right? Please excuse my ignorance, and that's why I'm hear talking to everyone. Reading about the yokohama S type ultra performance tyre had me thinking that it would be the business, but maybe some doubt about the wet.

The Tyre Wall depth is a percentage of the tyre tread face. So the wider the tread the deaper the tyre walls. Which increases the rolling radius and make it bigger than the standard gearing allows for.

don't know the exact formula but a good tyre shop will sort it out for you. + I have a set of 17" Work 3 piece rims on one of my SWB and I have 225/45/17 fronts and 255/40/17 rears and know with my wheels that a 265 would require the arches to be rolled.

The Blue LWB in my sig bellow has 235/35/18 fronts and 265/30/18 rears and needed the arches rolling, but my other SWB has 265/18's and they clear ok. So very much down to wheel makes and offsets

Thank you MarkZX for explaining that to me I understand what your saying.

Stu300SMZ

If you're going to a 255 or 265 /17 on the rear, a 40 profile will give you around the same circumference as orginals
