also when i let the key go the electric fan comes on for a few seconds and there is also a funny clicking noise while turning over it a 300zx tt jap z32 1990 thanks

elecric fan coming on would indicate either temp sender not connected or the ECU connector is'nt properly connected. The 1st wont really affect starting, the 2nd will.

Have you checked for spark and/or fuel on each cylinder ?

If you have an Alarm/Immobiliser that could stop it firing, especially if batt has been disconnected for some time. Or ecu prob?

Check the connection on the PTU or the camshaft position sensor.

The latter was the problem with my car... and the reason why the last owner (car trader) couldnt get it started for 2 years!

where is clicking noise coming from ?

i dont remember removing anything to do with the ecu unless there is something under the bonnet to do with the ecu is there if so where

did "you" or a garage do the re-build..????

if a garage did ,,you need to chat with them .....if....you did it yourself ,,it's time to start looking at the wireing, ptu, ecu and the electrices...

i did it all 3 and a half months

The camshaft position sensor... which is located on the right side of the cambelt cover

It will be the temp sender switch then on the coolant pipes causing the fan to come on, but that wont stop it starting.

You need to work out if your missing spark or fuel. Pull out each coilpack and test them for spark

thanks will try that tommorrow any thing else anyone can think of ie earth wires how many i also have a very thick wire running along the bulk head its yellow and black with to quite substantial brackets on the end like battery terminals any one know what this is and were it goes cause thats not connected yet would that stop it starting

ok check put and cam shaft sensor today and all pluged in i have took one of the coil packs out and put in next to plenum to check spark there is no spark while car is turning over but there is one quite strong spark as you let go of the key any ideas thanks

more help needed can any one offer more help please tried all of the above and still no FIRE please help

so you have no spark when turning over but when you let go it sparks (confused)

id say your PTU has failed more than likely have you checked you have fuel flowing to the rail? simply remove the hose from the fuel filter engine side and connect a hose to the filter and use a bottle to collect whilst someone turns the engine over.

ptu can be swapped with someone local, to be honest if you rebuild an engine you should be able to check for simple things like spark/fuel/compression.(meant in the nicest possible way).

thats what im saying i have checked all this and still no fire im stumped

you said you hecked for spark and there is no spark when you turned the key? except when you let go>

so does it know spark as soon as you turn the key.

no still only one spark after key is let go

no still only one spark after key is let go

so your not getting a spark then :smash: , sounds odd to me, are the ground connections connected at the back of the engine? this shouldnt cause this issue but its related to the ptu in any case i would check connections at PTU or swap over a known good one, but firstly dont just check for spark on one cylinder check all of them with a decent spark plug and known working coil pack, if the same! could well be a timing issue. Check the simple things first.

As greg said get hold of a PTU and try that 1st... i take it you have fitted new spark plugs? i chased a non starting problem from weeks a few years back and it turned out to be that the spark plugs were fooked, they sparked but not enough to get her properly going.

You need to write a list and work through it, otherwise you will just flit from bit to bit and not get anywhere

Have read on another thread that often if the ecu connector is screwed in too tight it doesnt start either, just a thought.

Mines outside the same turns over but doesnt start. It was starting but had a misfire so I cleaned the temp sensor connector and now it wont start! Ive ordered a new PTU as mine is the original S1 and a second hand good working CAS and new sensors as Im tired of trying to find out which bit needs a wiggle!

Good luck Z1 in the states are selling PTU for 150 dollars and good used CAS for the same if you want to do the same.
