Torn Steering rack Boot ??

How hard is it to replace the steering rack and any idea's on cost or can i replace both boots along with internals e.t.c (sorry if that is a stupid question but its the only part on cars that i have never touched . ;)

    So what are you wanting to replace? The torn rack boot or the rack itself? What exactly wrong? Is it JUST the rack boots that are split?

    I think a new rack from Nissan is about £600-700 ish. You can pick up a second hand one for about £100.

    Wow 600-700 !!!! Its the boot plus a little ring that has come lose, there is no play in the rack at all so i dont know if i can just replace some of it ?

    I would not think you would need to replace the complete rack, usually it is either the racks track rods which come with a replacement ball joint kit which fits to the rack itself, or just the rack rubber boots. both are available from Mike Pheeney (MJP) plus probably others on here for around £150. if you are buying the replacement track rods, also request new lockwashers as they were not supplied with my kit from MJP, and after taking them off they were in a pretty sorry state. All the above is possible by a relative novice, not a nice job tho'.

    Ah i think it might be the track rods that you have mentioned, glad i dont have to buy a whole new rack !

    Boots are £17 from MJP but still waiting on a price/availability on the other part.

    Not done mine yet,probably doing it at the weekend.
