everytime i start my car up from cold the fan belt squeels for about 2 or 3 minutes, it only does this when there is no load on the clutch, i.e in neutral or in gear, if i slowly bring up the clutch with my other foot on the brake so the car is almost stalling, the squeel goes, but as soon i go to pull away normal the squeel comes back...

what belt is this likely to be?

does it need tightening or replaceing?

how do i tighten it?

cheers guys

will be the fan belt like you say, when was the last time it was changed?

Tightening is an easy job, much easier with the car up on a ramp though :p I'm usually an advocate of doing work yourself, but for the effort and especially if you are not the most mechanically minded then any garage with half a brain between them will be able to do this very quickly.

Anyway here is the page from the manual you will be interested in.

  • 1 month later...

sorry to resurrect an old thread but i was doing a search as i sometimes have a bit of fan belt squeak on start up.

The page from the manual shows how to do the adjustments to the pulleys but which one is for the fan slipping. I am pretty sure it is the fan belt and not the clutch bearing or the oil pump bearing because i can hear and have seen the viscous fan speeding up after the squeal stops.

How exactly to i make the adjustment?

Tempted by the quick fixes i have seen ("stop squeak" - which i cant find for sale anywhere, WD40, talcum powder) because i am worried about waking the neighbours when i leave in the morning but some people seem to say they make the problem worse!

Put talc on mine and had the missus in uproar coz I got her to start the car with my head under the bonnet and came up with my face all white and coughing and spluttering....worked well for about 6 months and has just started again. I wouldnt use WD40 coz it might stop the noise but is a lubricant so would make the belt more slippy and a bugger to get rid of if it soaks in. Mines auto by the way so cant be anything to do with clutch

well i would rather do it properly rather than quick fixes as it seems pretty easy from the above

BUT.......

can anyone tell me which of adjusting bolts i need to adjust to solve fan belt squeal??

Adjust the alternator :)

i had the same prob on my uk auto... i tightened the belts, no joy... so i replaced the belts and still it continued to squeal...

it turned out to be a leaking power steering hose from the reservoir... it was leaking down and finding itself onto the alternator pulley!

since then iv seen a few zeds with evidence of leakage from the power steering pipe so its possible... worth a try, it might be a quick fix for ya, just tighten up the clamp and off u go :)
