Hi guys i know you have all been asked this before but im a girl who needs to ask questions lol. My zed has only done 26k and is a twin turbo. I was told to use a semi synthetic 5w30 oil when i do my oil change. Now is this right??? I dont want to put an oil in thats going to make the car tap but at the same time, i had a Cav Turbo and i used a 5w40 full synthetic oil in that coz it liked it and i never had any problems. What do i use for the best???

Thanks Sarah

the specified oil by nissan is 10/30 or 15/40 synthetic.many people swear by 10/60 which is sold by traders on here and is a good alternative for high performance turbo cars.

TBH a 5W 30 will be good at low temps like we have in the UK most of the year, but not so good at high running temps (which the Z does run to) I'd go for a 10w 40, decent cold start protection and 40 sae can run up to 130ish deg before oil starts to shear.

Basically, the lower the first no, the thicker it is on startup and will protect the engine on cold start, the higher the second number, the thicker the oil will be at high temp (so 10w 60 sounds attractive). But its also down to molecules and the makeup of the oil, and semi or fully synth, a lot of oils differ.

TBH I'd say a 10w 40 semi synth is the best balance for a Z over here, but ppl will hace their own opinions on oil, it's a funny old thing!

Ok thanks, well ive put the 5w 30 in but its only done 200miles on it so i will use it as an engine flush and change it again since the car is new to me. And i will look into the 10w40 and the 10w60 oil. Sarah

My UK hand book says 10w40 semi-synthetic ;)

Steve-o was spot on; the "30" bit means it will be too thin at high temps; especialy with the harder driving on UK roads. If your car is stock-ish then a 10w40 semi will be OK but a 5w40 synthetic will be better.

Most decent syntheic oils sold in top branded petrol stations will be 5w40. I favour Shell Helix Ultra; £34.99 (or free on my company fuel card ;) ) for 4 litres plus you can collect your "Shell plus points".

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I thought the higher the number the thicker the oil on both start up and hot so a 5w30 will be thinner on start up than a 10w40.

Ive also read that the "W" stands for winter???

Id put fully synthetic in myself, I use 5W50, id say 5W40 would be about right for stock zeds, 5W50 if the boost is upped and a 10W60 if its got bigger turbos running high boost.

what about for walloping it down the autobahns for 100 miles or so? and if you may have tubby seal problems!

........................

W does indeed stand for winter - as it refers to the viscosity when cold. So the lower the 1st number before the "w" the better it is at circulating after cold starting.

The second number is the viscosity when hot and its ability to withstand higher temps without breaking down. See Oilman's many threads..... ;)

A modern multigrade can therefore be thin for cold starts but also withstand high running temps. So a 0w40 oil is essentially the same when hot as a 10w40, but it will get round the engine faster on a cold start than a 10w40.

What he said...But, in addition there is also the question of oil rated at 5 or below can be too thin for our engines.

But you realy need to read up on it because there are as many different answers as there are different oils....

bump

If you go to a Nissan GB garage we use 10W30 oil but would personally go for a 10W50

I use Silkolene pro s 10/50w from opie oils who are a trader here, simply the best oil i've ever used (not cheap though)

What he said!!

I used to use Mobil 1, but it has been downgraded (it is no longer a genuine fully synthetic oil, although they still charge the same money for it!!) since Mobil was taken over by the yanks, so won't touch it now. I now use Motul 300v motorsport 5w40 fully synth, fantastic multi-ester based synth (which I have read a lot of high performance car owners use in Japan, Zeds, Skylines etc), it is brill, certainly NOT cheap, but woth every penny, one of the only GENUINE fully synthetic oils still available.

Ok guys thanks for all your help, im still not 100% sure what im going to use as so many people have there own ideas on what to use lol. But i think im going to use a fully on her since she has only done 26k.

there is a new fully synthetic oil out called "Q Horse Power" it's a 5W-30 and fully recommended by Ferrari.

It's a little expensive because of the Ferrari Recommendation but is well worth it. My M5 loves it and will be using this from now on.

Check out

IMHO 5w-30 is not good enough for our engines.

And being recommended by Ferrari means nothing as they are a bunch of lying, cheating, moaning old gits and poor loosers whoos cars are driven by old rich people who hardly ever drive them and then not how they should be. And a service costs more than our cars are worth.

You may guess I dont like Ferrari. lol

Lol yeah i kinda guessed that mate. If you check the web page for them they do other grades as well mate including a 10w 40 which is more than suitable for the 300's :nana2:

So you think i would be better off using a 10w 40 then????

My original Owners hand book states 10w40 semi synthetic or 15/40 fully synthetic.

So for a standard TT that is the oil grades I'd use.

05w30 is much too thin and will run through your pcv breather system ever hard right turn you make and then smoke like a Louisiana River boat.

If your running a chipped ECU and higher boost 10w50 is recomended as the oil temps will run high than a standard car, Which runs high enough as it is.

No I don't think I know your car will come to no harm running 10w40 but 05w30 is going to cook.

Ok so silly question whats the difference between the fully synthetic and the semi one you have just said would be good to use?? I mean the fully one sounds like that would be a better oil for the car then the semi???
