The missus came home the other day and started telling me a story of her drive home: She was driving in traffic and a Ferrari came flying past overtaking into incoming traffic and generally freaking people out. Now I couldn't say much here as owning a rather nippy car I often overtake into incoming traffic knowing the capabilities of the car that I'm safe. On occasions I'd imagine it freaks people who don't expect the car to be so fast. The Ferrari dissapeared around the next corner. When the missus got around the corner there was a pile up :slap: The Ferrari was on the grass verge seemingly undamaged. Two or three cars were on the same side where the front one had obviously braked hard to let the overtaking Ferrari back in before a headon. The cars behind had been tailgating so went into the back of the front car. The same thing had happened on the other side of the road; two or three cars piled up. Thankfully no one seemed to be hurt.

Now here's my thoughts :nana2: The Ferrari driver is obviously either 'a pr*ck who can't drive' or possibly 'a new owner getting too ambitious and learning his lesson the hard way', still a pr*ck obviously for not thinking of others. I expect most people agree with me so far. I also think that those people in the pile ups either side are as much to blame (and I'm sure there insurance companies will say the same thing). 80% of people on the roads, especially in South East traffic jams, tailgate the car in front for no reason other than stopping the car behind from jumping into the gap. What do you think? :D

I had to go on a speed awareness course due to one of the times I got caught by a speed camera. At one point we got asked who tailgates. I put my hand up and said I sometimes tailgate people who hog the overtaking lane on dual carriageways (one of my pet hates). He went on to (in a nice way) show me how dangerous it is. I had some performance driving lessons over the next year and tailgating was the no1 no-no. I still hate lane hogs but try to get them to go back where they belong in other more friendly ways first :smash:

Just thought I'd share the story. The missus thinks its unreasonable for me to think the people in the pileups are at fault as it wouldn't have happened if the Ferrari drivers wasn't being an idiot?

too bloody right im with the missus, even if they were tailgating the pile up was caused by his total disregard fro the laws of the highway, he thought having such a car gave him the god damn right to drive how he wants and endanger public safety.

And once again the instigator walks away unharmedits a shame his overpriced pile of italian metal wasnt bent beyond repair, that would teach him to get too big for his boots!!

Good on the Ferrari driver to stop. If his car is fine eh didn't need to!

The Ferrari driver may have made someone hit the brakes a little hard but if everyone had kept a propper stopping distance this would not have been a problem.

My conclution :-

The ferrari driver was the catalist of the chain of events that could have been avoided if the other drivers were driving propperly.

No the pile up was caused by them tailgating, all he caused was for someone to brake. It was the tailgaters total disregard fro the laws of the highway that caused them to be in the crash.

yup i agree

what if a child had stepped out infront of the cars all tailgaiting, and the pile u happened because of that, would it be the stoopid kids fault they all went into the back of each other, i dont think so

agreed, if you crash into the back of someone then its your fault unless they pulled out in front of you or a car behind pushed you into them.

you should be able to stop in the space behind the car in front of you whatever the circumstances

yes you should not saying i disagree the tailgaters should not have been tailgating, but if people didnt drive like complete maniacs, showing off in their "sports cars" there wouldnt be half the crashes!!

have you never showed off :p

i have

not like that no, i can 100 per cent honestly say i havent. Im too scared of crashing and not trusting enough of my driving skill, sure foot down on a straight open, empty highway but never in heavy traffic, i dont trust my cars or my driving, im sure a few on here will back me up as being a total wet lettuce when it comes to driving at speed

I make no bones with the fact that I like to drive fast. I also like to think that I can do a decent job of driving fast safely. If the Ferrari driver has caused the others cars to brake then he has definately made the error. But, those other people were making just as bad a misjudgment in my view and it has proven to be just as dangerous, in some ways more dangerous because if they had kept there distance then there wouldn't have been a crash at all! The Ferrari driver would have overtook at an unsafe time, the other cars would have realised and thrown the anchors on, nobody would crash, Mr Ferrari drives off looking like an idiot and hopefully learn't his lesson without crashing.

Yeah I'll back you up on that. Plus you better take it easy on my tyres or else   ;)

they are fine buying new ones this weekend need my pimping wheels back!!

Pimping? Yeah ok LMAO

Maybe the Ferrari was being over-ambitious in his manouevre, but if there'd been a 2-second gap in between cars he could have pulled in no problem...

how about the alternative cause of events: car at front of line was doing 45 mph in a 60, drivers behind were pissed off but didn't have the power to overtake... Ferrari does, gets in front of first car and first car panics cos they've not been watching their mirrors and dabs brakes. Cue pile up behind, one car swerves to avoid collision causing pile up on other side... erm, Ferrari driver pulls onto grass to offer assistance?? haha - point is, tailgating causes much more accidents than lairy overtaking!

No-one down here seems to expect anyone to overtake any more. When it does happen, you often get cars coming the other way overreacting, either by flashing their lights or by slowing down when there's plenty of room for the overtake and no need to do anything.

That could have been what happened in this case and the Ferrari driver may be totally blameless.

plus cause its a ferrari, everyone assume's he is a young prick with loads of money and hasent got a clue how to drive, and he is also to blame

if you are overtaking in heavy traffic there is no safe way of doing it. I spend all my working time driving on the roads an i am fed up with having to drive in such a way as to compensate for idiots on the roads.Such as middle lane hoggers, people who dont know what the orange light on each corner of thier car is for on roundabouts and people how drive in a dangerous way when traffic is heavy because they think they are better than everyone else.

think you are from my school of thought, its the fact that they scare other drivers and make them panic by their eratic driving, normally such offences are committed by BMW drivers from previouss experience

you got to admit its normally well paid reps in company bmws!!

if a person can get scared from the way another person drive's then they shouldnt be on the road as panic attacks so to speak can cause more accidents than anything else

must disagree stella, if someone is driving in an erratic manner and dangerously and another road user following the rules of the highway gets un nerved that is not their fault.

I for one am sick of people cutting across me on the m1, squeezing into a gap barely large enough for their car, causing me to brake and make my heart end up in my mouth, i would not say that is my fault and that i shouldnt be on the road because it 5hits me up. In my opinion of course

today i had a so called road user nearly swerve into me cause they got scared and paniked when a pigeon flew down onto the road, you should have seen the face on her because she was about to run a flying rat over, never mind the car (me) coming towards her

all she could do when i blew the horn was point at the pigeon to as if to say "i will crash into your car, but i aint running a pigeon over)

this is what i meant by people paniking on the road, she should be banned if that is the way she goes on

it is down to the person who is doing the overtaking to make sure that it can be done in a safe way. If there is any doubt then they should stay where they are. Dont get me wrong i overtake people all the time but is it really worth killing someone just to be five mins early?
