I have seen some pics of a Z I like, So I contacted the owner and spoke to him about various things and I suggested that I would get it checked out (nothing wrong in that I thought) But when I asked him for the VIN mumber he refused......Why? Am I in the wrong or has he something to hide? Or do I not need the VIN number?

you're not in the wrong, it is something that you should ask for, especially if you are going to have an HPI check done, as you will be able to confirm the reg and vin.

 

however, the seller may be suffering some form of paranoia, that as he doesn't know you, can he trust you with the number ?

 

You might have a ringer needing a vin....

 

What you could do is get a check done with the reg no, then you will get the vin.

Then go to the car and compare the numbers yourself.

Or, go and view the car and get the vin yourself.

Have you actually seen this car yet? Its best to go and see it and then if you think you want to buy it you can do the HP check on the spot with the buyer standing right next to you. Just take a mobile with you and ring them. I think as Craig said the owner may be paranoid as you haven't even viewed his car yet.

 

Also the HP check costs you and its only worth it if your 100% sure that your going to buy the car and if you havent even seen the car yet and only seen a picture then I can understanding the owners paranoia.

 

It takes just a couple of minutes to do the HP check, so don't worry about having to do it prior to seeing the car, its done on the spot while your still on the phone.
