Hi,

Trying to get a printer to work via a wireless network but it just won't see it :( My PC is connected to a wireless modem router with a cable. The printer is attached to the laptop upstairs with a parallel cable. The laptop is connected to the Network. So far this is what I've tried:

The printer prints fine from the laptop and I've set the option to share the printer on a network.

I've then used the printers and faxes options in control panel where I've tried to add a printer. There are 2 options which you can see in the attachment. I don't understand the bit on there that says "To set up a network printer that is not attached to a print server, use the "local printer" option. From this point, what ever option I choose, I can't get it to see the printer :( Any ideas???

Cheers

Vijay

Hello bud,

I've set the option on the laptop to share printer and then searched for the printer on the PC, it sees the network (I think) but not the printer :(

Think I've found the problem. The laptop can see the PC's shared files but the PC cannot see the laptops. I've called Belkin who said I had to enable the lan on my pc but I told them it was already on as it is connected to the modem router by the lan port :( Any ideas on this???

Have you got file sharing enabled on the laptop? I think this is what Belkin are talking about. Just because you have an internet connection doesn't mean you have allowed windows to share files, etc. Right click on the hard drive and go to sharing and security, enable file sharing. Not sure how it effects shared printers but probably the same :smash:

Both machines are running XP.

Just allowed sharing on C drive of the laptop, PC still can't see the laptop files :(

Hmm, as you can see the PCs shared files from the laptop you must have IP connection and be in the same workgroup. Firewall seems the most likely culprit.

the only firewall on the PC is the windows one which is set to off. For some reason though, it's not allowing me to turn it on at all, would that suggest a problem with the firewall??

Vijay

Not sure mate, my brain has rejected anything windows for a while now! Does sound odd, are you sure there's nothing else on there? Need one of the windows guys to give some suggestions!

Also if you look in the exceptions tab of the firewall (control panel) windows printer and file sharing should be listed and ticked.

On the laptop click on Start then Run. Type in CMD and hit return. In the DOS window that appears type "ipconfig" without the quotes. Hit return and make a note of the IP address.

Go on to your other PC and click on Start then Run. Type \\ followed by the IP of the Laptop you just wrote down. i.e \\192.168.0.1 then hit return. You should get a window pop up with the shared printer in it. You can then right click on it and select "connect".

If this window doesn't popup try enabling the "guest" account on your laptop and trying again.

It sounds like a permissions issue to me.

Or do as above with CMD prompt, type "net view *IP address of laptop*" and it will tell you if the printer is available as a network share...

Once you have this, select network printer when adding, then on the next box, type in \\*IP address of laptop*\*printer name* and it should work

:)

the best thing IMHO is a network interface for the printer like a HP Jet Direct. That was both computers dont have to be on at the same time.

I'll try this lot in a minute :) Why can't the PC see the laptops shared files?

This problem is almost always firewall related Vijay. You definitely haven't got Norton Internet Security running have you (the usual culprit with LAN access). The fact that you can't turn the Windows firewall on suggests that there is another firewall running...

Have you set the IP address of each computer manually? If you're not using a router then you need to ensure that both computers have an IP address in the same subnet (eg: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2). Run IPCONFIG on both machines from the command prompt and see what is reported...

go to start>run then type \\"ip of computer you are trying to access"

so something like \\192.168.0.2

the window that opens will show all available resources normally, including printer etc.

Right, these are the IP addresses:

PC:

IP address 192.168.2.2

Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Default gateway 192.168.2.1

Laptop.

IP address 192.168.2.3

Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Default gateway 192.168.2.1

Here's the IP config screen from the PC

basically on the Pc, if you go to start>run then type in \\192.168.2.3 and press enter you should see the resources available on the laptop

\\192.168.2.2 will show you the resources available on the desktop from the laptop.

I did that mate, look at the attached jpeg, it came up with an error :(

just tried it, get this error. Thinkong of formatting the laptop soon :(

On the laptop go to the share and check the security settings are allowing everyone full control then try again !

Have you got file and print sharing enabled on both machines?

Vijay - this may well be a permissions issue after all. Take a look at the following:

This is a permission issue. If the net view command fails with a "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied." message, 1) make sure you are logged on using an account that has permission to view the shares on the remote computer.

2) Need to cache credential: logon the same username and password on both computers or use net net use \\computername /user:username command.

3) Make sure the Netlogon service is running.

Give me a buzz if you need some help with the above ;)

Ended up doing a format and re-install. Now can't get the laptop to connect to the router :( Should the IP addresses and subnet mask be the same (apart from the last digit)?

If it's on wireless bud, make sure the wireless adapter is enabled and working and that it can see the wireless SSID. Buzz me if you get stuck :D
