So, I found this little lot in the garage today lurking on a shelf.

I very much want to learn how to use it :D So can anyone tell me, or tell me where to find out what kind of paint I need, what to do with it, how to spray it, and so on... I've seen this done on the tv lots of times and it looks quite technical!

Thanks :)

Errr i cant see a reciever tank for the compressor?

But paint process is as follows..........

Crash car :mac1:

Replace panels

Prep and prime panels

Buy paint

Mix paint

Apply paint

Easy peasy :) 5 minutes work :D

Get some spare panels from the scrappy. Old Ford Sierra bonnet or something.

Various types of paint you can use. If you want a professional finish, then you're best off using 2k paints. Acrylic/cellulose is not good, finish never lasts and goes cloudy, paint can react badly with even the most minor of contaminants.

Various methods of painting/prep dependant up what you're spraying and what type of paint you're using.

Need some breathing (respirator) equipment for 2k paint though.

I have a compressor and gun and used to refurb the odd wheel or two. Have done a number of car body panels with pretty good success. But wouldn't spray again unless using 2k and I don't have the B.A for that at the moment..

Guess i'll give it a go with some celly see what happens. I've been told this equipment looks crap so we shall see, i've read about 2k hardener and it sounds like nasty stuff :/

That is a very very very very very very small compressor....if indeed it is one which is sat on your bench. Only really suitable for very small areas. If you're doing large panels, you'll end up running out of airline pressure and you'll have a right blobby mess on your hands!

2k does require a hardener/activator plus thinners and yes and it's quite noxious. But I'd never use any of the acrylic paints again to be honest. Ok for interior bits I supposed and small detail. But not for a panel or anything.

But, it's cheap and ideal if you want to hone your painting skills. But as well as the painting, it's just as important to get the prep and finishing up to scratch. There's methods for all of these.

I think the compressor I have is rated at 2hp, which is just about enough for doing large panels.

The best way to learn how to spray is to do it, and yes this spray gun is not up to the job of spraying a car or even a panel but it is a good chance to be able to learn. Do not use 2K if you are just learning to spray (it is dangerous); if you feel you are good enough to have a go at a car you will need a 3hp compressor with a 50L tank and a HVLP gun. You would be looking at about £400 for a set-up like this, but to start with use a 50% colour or lacquer to 50% thinners.

You,ll struggle with a diaphram compressor like that , any liquid thicker than water is usually too thick :smash: , i use mine for creosoting the fence :hyper:

IIRC in the olden days when we used the Devilbis guns you needed a working pressure of around 55 psi , the modern day HVLP ( high volume low pressure ) need less but i don,t know what it is :slap:

You can get a mixing stick for 2 pack paint ( looks a bit like an aluminium ruler ) marked on this is the correct measures for mixing the paint , thinner and activator , which automatically gives you the correct consistancy of paint and then it,s just a case of practicing how heavy or light you have to apply the paint for a nice finish . :hyper:
