Can I take the head off with the engine still in the car or is it best to take it out?

Also apart from the bolts up the centre does anything else hold the inlet manifold on? Taken them out and the various hoses etc but still won't move????

Is it a TT or an N/A?

You can do it in situ, but to be honest, if its a TT, your better just pulling the engine out.

have you undone the egr pipes on the lower side of the plenum ?

It's a TT, just found the egr hoses - how the hell do you undo those?

pull the engine, its an arse in situ all IMO

trouble is getting the dipstick tube through the mani on A TT

besides you can pull the engine in 2hours or so

Bloody hell, taken me longer than that to get the manifold off  Never seen so many pipes, bolts and crap stuck on a manifold. Think I will look into the egr mods I've seen mentioned to cut down on them.

Hope getting the head off is easier!

you will struggle getting the ERG off the manifold so you will more than likely need to cut it off a few mm short off the manifold and weld it up! hammer&chisel then tidy it up when heads/turbos/fanimoulds are out!

TBH alot of the hoses are nissan overkill, if your unsure mark each hose with tipex ie 1 dot on hose then one dot on connection etc.

OS head comes off with little pain its just fiddly pulling it out, NS is an arse getting the dipstick through the manifold, you can always tell when someone has done the heads in situ, as you normally find the dipsitck snapped and some fool add a piece of hose in between LOL

reason most people pull the engine as there are alot of water and oil pipes, if there not done up properly then tada to engine, also you can see what your doing, alot of the work is blind with engine in, you also have the fun of dissconecting the turbo oil/coolant feeds, thats more awkward than taking the intake mani off :hurl:

take your time im sure your competant but if your struggling getting the intake off you have some fun ahead :smash: :D

Thanks for the advice Greg. So far the manifolds off, cam covers and I'm just taking off the cam belt and cylinder head inlet so the heads will be off soon. I can have a look to see then if its just the gaskets gone. If I find more than that I have another engine lined up which just needs sticking back together so I will then take the bottom end out and put in the new one complete.

As this is a new car for me to work on and the absence of a manual I thought bit by bit was a better way to start until I get familiar with it. As for Nissan hose overkill - Abosolutely!!! I can see ways to reduce these with direct hose route rather than lots of hose-metal pipe-hose-metal pipe etc

One question is the EGR threads, there is a way to reduce the hoses by direct lines or can it be scrapped all together?

The EGR can be scrapped, there are blanking kits available, but a bit of ingenuity and some weld/araldite will do just as well.

Like the 1 pence coins i araldited to my holes? :mac1: 2 Years and they are still there Lol

I left the Turbo and manifold attached to the Drivers side head when i removed my head but you need strong arms to lift it out and someone to hold onto your legs to stop you falling into the Engine bay like i nearly did lifting it back in place Lol :D and you must remember to fit the Wastgate hose before you locate the head to the block otherwise you are left with a PITA job of putting back on from underneath afterwards! :mac1: also as Greg says you'd have alot of hassle with the Passenger side head. :D

More fun to come then!! Does anyone know a link to the egr thread? starting to wonder if I'm doing the right thing
