Avoid the early ones, i think you are okay after S or T reg, they had a problem of some sort but if you can afford it get the TF, handles better. Everyone on here though will tell you to get a MX5 but I prefer the MG.

Early ones came with almost nothing, not even PAS and questionable build quality. They are starting to look tatty now. Rust is now appearing on those models. As above, if you can stretch to the TF model, they are much nicer. But as with all 16v Rover engines, keep an eye on the oil for signs of head gasket failure. Tappets can start to make a bit of a din on these too if not properly maintained.

MX-5 is a better handling car and much better built, but I actually prefer the look of the MGTF. Nice looking little car and good fun to drive.

My other half had an F and has currently got a TF. The TF is so much better, it's only 135bhp but it delivers it well and handles superbly. As has been said before, watch out for headgaskets on the F model as they were prone to failing within the 1st 30000 miles, the one you're looking says that there are loads of receipts so this may have been done, if it hasn't then be careful. When they started making the TF they used a new type of HG and some different head bolts which cured the problem.

The F will rattle quite a lot so don't be too concerned about squeaks and noises in the cabin. Have a good look at the rear window and general condition of the roof as they are not cheap if you need to change them. The rear windows have a habit of cracking/splitting in the winter.

For all the faults that her F had, she loved it (even though it broke down a few times and cost her a bit!!!!), so much so that she bought a brand new TF. They are fun little cars but just check the history thoroughly.

The problem with the mgf is that the engine is steel and the head is aluminium which expand at different rates when hot, thus causing head gasket failure. They also leak like a sieve lol.Check for leaks by lifting the carpet in the footwells and behind the seats.I suggest you go on the MGF forum and do some reading. The girlfriend has had a TF for 3 years and she loves it, it's an 02 and it leaks, the head gasket went at 20,000 miles and it's starting to rust :headvswal Off to look at the new civic type r this week. With regret the TF has to go. :(

Keep away  Even more trouble than the Zed.There so unreliable it's untrue, there so complicated with more things to go wrong than the Zed.

My parents had a T plate Mgf-vvc and had no problems at all with it. Granted they only did about 40 miles a year :D but they loved it. Only sold it a month or so ago and was an absolute corker!

I hated it tho! but I am 6'3 and 18 stone :D :D and found it a nightmare to drive.

I'll tell you a quick story why I particularly hate it.

My parents asked me to take it for it's mot last year, so off I went roof up so no one would recognize me. After the token mot (it had done 25 miles in that year!) I decided as the sun was out I might as well put the roof down, and my neck was sore from leaning over to see out of the windscreen with the hood up :D

So down went the roof and off I went. A song came on the radio "I knew you were waiting" by George Michael and Aretha Franklin, remember that one? Oh I thought I like this I'll turn it up, totally forgetting I'm in a convertible. Next thing I know I'm singing along to the tune. A few minutes pass and I round a corner and have to stop at a junction. I look to my right and there's a gang of teenagers with a few cans of lager. They clock me, the car and worse of all the tune I'm listening to. That's it nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, I couldn't find the volume button quick enough or pray for a gap in the traffic for me to go!

After that incident I never drove it again or went near it!

Ade.

A couple in my street have one and it's had more things go wrong with it than Zed, and thats saying something. As Si said the head gaskets are a common failure on them.
