i'll shortly by having my engine rebuilt and my tubbies refurbed with 360 degree b/bs. im keeping standard internals, 555's with suitable chip, uprated oil pump, manual cams (my car was an auto and still has the auto cams), manual spec turbos after refurb. while this is being done i'd like to spend just a bit more on various bits and bobs. im thinking:

Series 2 PTU (my S1 has been fine but you never know)

Uprated sidemount intercoolers (although my bumper is blended in so my options could be limited)

(possibly) Greg Dupree divorced downpipes

water bypass around plenum (can someone tell me more about this)

i had the option of forged pistons but tbh i really dont want to be tempted to push for big power.

so, in your opinions, would a rebuilt engine be able to hold about 17psi and roughly 420bhp? and what other jobs would you have done while the engine was out?

For the cost of a set of Wiseco forged pistons from the US which are about $600 or something silly like that, I'd think about doing that. It's one thing I wished I'd have gone for when I did mine. Although I'll never be taking mine above 14PSi, it makes the engine a bit more indestructible. :)

Over 400bhp I'd want forged pistons.

Cant you get wiseco forged piston's from smithy's???? I'm sure they're around £400 a set but could be worth a look into!

Also, how long ago was the clutch done?

Might be worthwhile looking at that since the engine's gonna be out anyway!

my broken engine is coming out on monday, new engine almost ready to go in

here is my list of stuff to do

Check new cam belt / timing

Swap over cam cover bolts

Repaint cam covers and rocker covers

Clean and repaint engine bay

egr system removal (blanks already fitted to plenium)

recirc removal, bumper have to come off?

aircon removal, aircon pump and aircon rad etc

carbon canister removal

swap alternator to new engine

check and fit better gearbox

Swap almost new seals from old gearbox

swap rps clutch, goodrich line, uprated pivot ball, fit new spigot bearing

change downpipes and check turbos

swap over aftermarket oil pressure sender

swap dip stick ? or use stock with spring?

connect and setup pro spec 2 on new engine

check setup tps

reconnect det sensor (remove resistor)

get ebay divorced downpipes + decats

get 3 more l of mt90 gearbox oil

fit koyo rad

cut down top rad pipe to fit?

Fit c/f fan shoud, keep old good non cracked fan

yeah Smithy does the Wiseco for £400ish. ive had the EGR bypassed already, and the clutch and flywheel are RPS/JWT and 6 months old so theyre ok.

thanks for the list Ed there are one or two ( :p ) ideas on there. i'll speak to Mickey next week, he's doing the work.

Nice one Dave , should be flying after all that,s done

A plenum bypass is a job worth doing IMO , under the plenum is a series of metal pipes joined together with rubber ones , they feed straight off the two metal hoses at the back of the engine that feed your matrix , go round under the plenum , through the throttle bodies and then to your turbo,s .

The bypass is just taking the feeds of the metal hoses that feed the matrix and putting them straight to your turbos , ( blue pipes in the second pic )

Peace of mind is achieved

Spec all looks good. Although forget about the uprated Oil pump, there are no uprated versions, the standard one is top notch.

While forged pistons are always a worthy upgrade You'll be fine with stock internals, they can handle a lot more than that providing your fuelling is spot on. Its detonation that kills them.

ok ive decided to go with forged pistons plus a little selection of toys as well ;) my bank manager (and especially my missus) will kill me when they find out how much im spending  better not tell them eh.

well i wont have any change from 3.5k by the end of the week but it will be worth it!

(a bit over my original budget of 2k) !

hicas now binned!

True *BUT* 17 year old pistons running high boost have a nasty habit of cracking the ring lands due to increased cylinder pressures, then its rebuild time and possibly new block time also! ;) Detonation will kill them but age is another factor ;)

My engine came with it done but we have swapped the red vac hose for proper water hose.

so im 25 is my ring worn :(

will i need rewhoreing LMAO

Narrr, just rimming...ahem...sorry, reaming.. lol ;)

If you don't mind me asking are they a good price?

not bad, theres always cheaper if you shop around, but id rather pay the money to have a good job done by someone i trust
