I also removed the original ashtray and made my own switch panel in matching leather and also made a matching leather panel for the lower DIN slot as well. You seem em!! indeed mate, that is carbon fibre in its original form, as im sure you know, resin is added to the cloth to form the solid type we all know... the only reason i asked was from AndyP's post...
