has anyone replaced their wing mirrors on their Uk zed with j-spec folding mirrors and make them fold?

Do you need anything else apart from the actual mirrors? Obviously you need the j-spec mirror control to have the switch to make them fold but anything else? On my prelude the j-specs had a relay box between the mirror control and the mirrors to make them fold.

Any ideas?

I don't know about the UK mirrors but I have a Jap spec 300 and the mirrors wobble in the folding section. PITA really so may not be worth doing.

It seems to be in the bushings :(

It wont be in the bushings, more likely you have a hairline crack in the alloy bezel that the mirrors fold on, you can either replace the whole unit for a less wobbly one you can normally find one on ebay for about £50 in the right colour if your willing to wait for one.

Or you can try andyz on here, if he hasnt got one he'll give you a yell when he does.

You can also fix minor cracks in the bezel, by taking the mirror unit off and using JB weld or similar to seal the crack, but be sparing with it or it will get in the folding mechanism and lock the mirror up. I sucessfully did this with mine a few years back, but a week later a motorcyclist with a top box just clipped it and snapped it off!!!

TIP; if you do think there is a crack in the bezel you have to be VERY careful when removing the unit as there is a small sping loaded ball bearing that clicks the mirror in place in the in or out position, the best way to make sure you cant lose them is to move the mirror to the halfway point between in and out before removal.

Hope this info helps.

Doh!

Forgot what i was going to post in the first place!!

The biggest problem you have to overcome when converting from uk to jap is the loom, because the jap and uk mirrors have very different plugs on them, its quite easy to modify a jap to take a uk mirror but to do the reverse you will need;

1. The Switch

2. The 2 Looms which go from the switches to the doors

3. The J spec mirrors (which are like hens teeth!!!)

Good Luck!!

how do you means looms? do i just need to run a couple of extra wires between the mirrors and switch (and therefore have to run the wires through the door and the whole of the car to get to the switch which will be PITA) and do some soldering to connect up the wires if the plugs dont match. Or do i need to buy the loom from a J-spec car too, and if so which section?

Bit confused about the operation now so putting it in simple terms how many spanners would the job get in a Haynes manual?!

lol, i think hes basically saying that the uk spec plug doesnt have enough terminals/wires to supply the folding mirrors... so you would need at least the plugs to fit into a jspec mirror and j spec switch and feed a wire separately (id say that would be the easiest option) or you find a complete loom with the correct plugs already on and fit that!

so, find yourself a breaking jspec...

> buy the mirrors and kindly ask them to cut off the plug (with some excess wire for soldering)

> buy the switch unit (same again with the plug/wires)

> buy some wire to retrofit a loom to solder onto the switch and mirror.

haynes manual 3 spanners for the pita of strip out!

You can also fix minor cracks in the bezel, by taking the mirror unit off and using JB weld or similar to seal the crack

I'll try that one.

Cheers
