How does this work exactly?

e.g. if you get your car de-locked and door handles removed and you have a flat batt would i have to climb through the boot to let myself in?

Yes bud :D

You can rig up a boot opener using a cable connected to the boot latch, pop a small hole out thru the base of the car, making sure you seal it up properly, then connect cables up to what ever mechanism you want to use to open the boot. :D

Some people have a hidden release under the wheel arch IIRC however the door poppers need to be quite strong on a Z, more PSI than your average car.

iirc you have to have a mechanical way of getting into the car for the MOT... i.e. some kind of hidden cable release for the door or boot.... or i could have dreamt it !

Correct.

that would make sense as if you had a accident they would need some way of getting you out.
