Hi All, Hope you can help me. I bought a 1991, UK 300 TT Auto. 72,000 miles, FSH etc. Drives fine, gear changes are smooth whilst driving but at idle the engine revs drop down to about 500rpm. Sometimes the revs recover but most of the time the engine stalls. In the morning the car starts fine, and gear changes seem to be fine, but if I switch off after a run, and then come back after a short period of time the same thing. Engine struggles to maintain idle on gear change. Car went into Nissan dealer over the weekend, they plugged Consult in which reported NO FAULTS with anything...HICAS, AIR-CON, A/T, Engine etc...They adjusted the idle which was set at around 1175rpm in P and N down to normal 750rpm. I'm worried though, technician suggested that the fault is electrical and recommended changing the wiring loom which he had just done on another 300 TT that week, only difference was that one was Manual. I don't want to spend 1000 squid on replacing the wiring loom and detonation sensor if this is not going to sort the problem. I have also read on the Web, most people say don't go to Nissan dealers and find a specialist instead. I was thinking of ringing Middlehurst because of their experience with Sklines etc. What should I do? Has anyone seen anything like this before and where should I go to get it sorted??? I love the car, chopped in a G reg Toyota Supra Turbo auto. for this car which I ran from 46,000 miles last year to 87,000 when I traded it in. I had no problems with my Toyota so I'm gutted that my Nissan is not measuring up in the reliability dept.

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim,

Stalling problems like you meantioned have come up on www.twinturbo.com lately. You may find the PCV valves need replacing due to age. I've cut some text from a post by Maciej (Hope you dont mind Maciej).

Positive Crankcase Ventilation valves were the cause of my car stalling after deceleration. The spring inside them was weak so they opened wide while braking.

They can also be the cause of bad idle.

They are ~$4 so this is a really cheap fix.

I think there's a write-up in FAQ on that subject.

I think it also wise you get a second opinon from a couple of specialists, as most of the Nissan dealers I've been to had pound signs in there eyes when they saw a Z32 pull up! :)

Let us know how you get on.

Laterz,

Trev.

Hi Tim,

I have a similar problem on my 1991 TT at idle the revs drop down to 500rpm and it feels like it's going to stall it then corrects itself.

I am going to get my PCV valves checked although it could be the idle stabilisation valve which is an air valve located on the back passenger side of the engine. I have had these fail on numerous cars due to the rubber seal drying out and the oscilating valve sticking. Generally a clean out with some WD40 solves the problem but I haven't figured out how to remove it from the engine yet.

Please let me know how you get on with yours?

Hi,

I had the same problem on mine, in my case it was the AAC valve gasket which cost a few pence as is easy to access. You could hear the air being sucked into the hole at idle at the back/right/top of the engine bay.

Nissan are crap in general. You're best bet is to follow the diag procedure in the manual, it's likely to be one of a few straight forward problems and not the wiring loom.

The manaul explains things such as clamping the PVC hose to tell if those components are at fault. Now hard huh.

Jez.

Nothing to add to other posts except DON'T be persuaded to have a new wiring loom. It's a bit like telling a body shop that you want a scratch repaired and they can't find the scratch and so respray the whole car.

If it does turn out to be electrical, you can be 99% sure it's a sensor rather than the loom and if it falls in the 1% then you'll be much better off having a repair.

Having said that, as others have said, likely to be mechanical (although do run the self diagnostic if you haven't already done so).

Hi Tim,

Have you got your TT fixed yet?

I have ordered 2 new PCV valves which I am going to have a go at fitting this weekend and will let you know if it makes any difference.

Anyone else noticed any difference in changing PCV valves?

Cheers

Stu

Stu,

I hope you ordered the PCV-rubber hoses as well,

as they become hard and brittle over the years.

One more thing, don't overtight the valves!

I heard of people braking their plenum this way...

Good luck!

Maciej
