Basically my car went in for the turbos to be exchanged/repaired and basically they are knackered. The exchange place was able to tell what mods I've done to my car by just looking at the turbos. The fact that I've upgraded the exhaust and intake filter creates a build up of carbon in the turbos (I think that's what he said). I also don't let the car idle for at least 30 seconds when I stop driving which doesn't exactly help. What I basically want to know is if anyone knows anything about turbo timers, what makes are there, and where do I get one from. This might be worth considering for every one as even Darren(seems like top mechanic) was suprised about my turbos cos one was still spinning (by hand). Any help would be appreciated.

Oh yeah, does any one know how this would affect the arming of the alarm??

Cheers

Vijay

Hi Vijay,

I have the HKS turbo timer which was already fitted on my Z when I bought it. Mine isn't linked with the alarm as this would effect the cat 1 status but I know that it can be done :-) I can keep the engine idling for up to 5 minutes after I remov the keys

The real turbo damage comes from the coking up of the internals which is causes by oil cooking on the shaft when they are very hot.

ie. after hard use.

Maintaining the oil flow to the turbos for a few minutes after hard use allows the shaft to cool sufficiently so that oil doesn't coke up.

This sounds like what has happend to yours and is generally what kills all turbos :-(

Hi Vijay,

I have a Razo turbo timer that came with the Z. You can preset the time you want or it will work out how long to idle by how hard it has been driven. I have a clifford virtual key which works fine with it.

Vijay,

If your still interested in how it would effect the alarm I found a great article on Zhome.com which tells you how to wire it so it wont. Theres also loads of other 'How to' articles which are really useful.

Go to 'Caring for your Z' (located on the main left frame of the site) and then click on 'How to for the 90+Z', scroll down half way (on the main page) and its under the accesories heading, labelled "980707 How someone... : made his Turbo Timer work with the factory alarm. "

You've probably got it sorted by now but if not hope you find it useful. (also check the other articles out)

Not all alarms will work with a turbo timer. Mine won't work together (as Bob will testify too after spending a couple of hours attacking my ignition system with cable cutters and then having to put the whole thing back together again).

I've just had a Cat 1 Clifford alarm fitted and the dealer fitted a "Turbo Timer" (a series of relays that delays arming of the alarm by 2 minutes and allows the engine to idle). It's operated by pressing one of the buttons on the remote before turning off the ignition. However, you can still lock the doors with the remote and walk away.
