Ask ten people what oil they use, and you will often get ten different answers, it's what i used in mine at my last oil change mate, and i've had no problems. Stick to a good quality fully synthetic around the 10/40 mark, change it regulary and you can't go wrong.

thanx got sumthing right 2day! yea i change mine regular but i used to give it to my mate who worked at a garage, not knowing wot oil he used! now his moved away and ive lost his num :( i decided ill give it ago but not sure wot oil to use.

That's just mineral oil isn't it? I use it in my rex as rotaries are supposed to use mineral only, but wouldn't use it in the Z.

I put mobil "something" s semi synth 10w40 in mine to go on the track last week and the car performed brilliantly

22 quid for 5 litres

as said before you will get many different opinions from many different people about what oil to use... a company called opieoils are our club trader for oils and have had a large imput on the forum regarding what oil to use. you may find these posts interesting to read.

i personally dont use castrol gtx as i view it as one of the 'cheapies'. i have always stuck by the recommendation given to me from guy @ opieoils to use silkolene pros 10w50. it will set you back about 40quid for 5L but i call it reassuringly expensive!

with that said i wouldnt panic and drain the oil out pronto, leave it in there until the next oil change (2-3k miles is what i do) and then consider using a more top end oil. btw, if you think castrol gtx is expensive, you obviously bought it from halfrauds... they have a generous mark up on all their prices!

disclaimer/smallprint: all IMO

Talking of Opie, if you ask them I seem to remember them saying if you use a OOD oil, then 2-3k oil changes are a waste of money as the oil is still goiod at that mileage.

This means that the £50.00 oil, that last twice as long becomes more reaonable than a "cheap" oil.

aaah didnt realise that, can you remember what mileage he recommended a change at?

IIRC it was somewhere between 6k and 9k miles; sorry I can't be more specific.

I have mine changed annually - around 5-6000 miles. Even one year on, the oil is still nice, clean and a relatively clear-golden brown.......

(I usually use Shell HElix Ultra 5w40 BTW ;) )

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I think I personally, up till a few years ago, vastly underestimated the importance of a good oil. And regualar changes.

I think that while any old oil can "seem" ok its when it under stress, more used than it can cope with etc that the damage occures. So thats why I now use good stuff only.

There is also the situation where one perfectly good quality oil can let your engine make more noise than a similar other good oil. Sometimes I have tried three oils just to find one that my engine "likes". Not just talking Z's here but other more normal cars too.

Currently the family Micra DCi likes Castrol GTD Magnatex.

I find this true as well!!

I always found Mobil-1 0w40 made the engine in my old Mk3 Supra seem more "rattle prone" it also ran with lower oil pressure when hot, depite still being a "40" rated oil. Castrol RS 0w40 - exactly the same grade - did not have that effect. ;)

After that experience, I decided never to put Mobil-1 in my ZX.......
