Tapping, knocking noise!!!!! Help!!!!

Hi all

Started the car up yesterday and noticed she was tapping quite hard. Had a listen around and if I put my ear against the plenum, front one on the right I can hear the sound really loudly although it does quieten down a lot once the car has warmed up though. Any ideas would be appreciated!!

Trying to get a video up but it's the wrong format and I'm in work  so I'll try again laters.

Anyone know of a garage round Aldershot, Farnborough area who might know what they are talking about??

Cheers

i think the first and chaepest thing you need to do is change the oil and see if it makes any difference

most proberbly a noisy lifter most likely its dry as they are hydraulic, no need for major concern, just anoying as already said give the car a good oil change

as above do an oil change, it will probably be a hydraulic lifter, i put abit of lifter treatment in mine and that quietened them down

Cheers fellas but I changed the oil about 2 weeks ago with Silkolene Pro s 10w 50. Same stuff as was used before I think. What is this lifter treatment???

Put the wynns stuff in last night and still no change. Drove it around for about 20 mins after having it idling for about 10. Should this have done the trick or will I need to run it for longer??

It was fairly quiet last night but when I started it again this morning the knocking noise was back!!

Usually takes about 100miles of running before you notice any change!

You could try an oil change and repeat dose.

I repeat after every oil change and has been succesful so far. occasionally does come back when starting when cold but soon goes away.

If this does not work may need to change lifters if it really bothers you that much.

OK, I will take it out for a good run this weekend then. Noise doesn't bother me than much once it's warmed up. I just don't want to do any damage to the engine if it ain't the lifters. Cheers

I have the same problem I have changed oil used lifter treatment and no luck its been doing it now for 7 months and its time to get them replaced! at least it wont damage your engine!!

Have you had any quotes yet to get them replaced Ronnie??

Not as yet mate I am trying to get a quote today as soon as I find out I will get right back to you...

I have a price to replace 24 lifters at http://www.swz.performance.co.uk for £700 but if you go for the full service including belts they charge £400 but add the lifters they will knock off £200 as there half way there with changing the cam belt so both together would cost £900 which is cheap as a sevice at nissan is over £1000.

Hope this helps you mate???

Nice one thanks..... Hopefully this Wynns stuff will quieten them down for a bit but thats not too bad when they finally do need changing. They can't just be done individually then can they??

had this in another zed and i found one of the cam lobes had squared off, prob due to oil starvation or a bad harden treatment, anyway new cam and it was cured ;) not sayin this is yours but worth thinkin about

I dont know if you can buy a single lifter? you probably could replace one if you knew which lifter it was? and you do have 24 to choose from! I think the amount of work involved you best change them all, doubt it would cost much less changing one. The price I was given for 24 was £250 and the rest in labour, but I do know they go for less if you look for them...

Wheres that to mate? is that including all the belts?

Ouch..trust me that is expensive.... the 9000 mile Nissan service involves just checking the clutch and brake fliud and brake pads, thats it. If they have to actually top up or replace any of it then that is extra.

They charge approx £1000 for the 60k Cambelt service.

Nissan dealers :slap:

Not to mention that most Dealer mechanics wont have even touched a 300zx before.

Sounds pricey.

Nissan main in Didcot changed my cambelt for 370 quid...

They also have an experienced 300 mech there too, so will prolly go back there for some private stuff... u know..

However Nissan in Reading are USELESS.

I think I'll keep my fingers crossed then that the lifter lube does it's job lol

Anyone know of anyone good around Aldershot / Farnborough / Basingstoke to take 300.
