Need to get my hubs off and one of the driveshafts is stuck - proper stuck.

The manual says 'a few light taps with a hammer to loosen off the splines or resort to a puller'. Well I moved from light taps to carefully directed thuds with a sledgehammer and have now bent a 2 jaw puller as well. The splines are clearly rusted on, although the other side which had just the merest dust of surface rust came off easily.

Any ideas ?

Current plan of last resort is to try and remove the hub & driveshaft in one piece and either see if they can be separated then or buy new ones from a breaker ...

Andy i have reciently had to remove one of my hubs and i have removed many driveshafts off cars in the workshop with ease! But i had the same problem as you! It was the passenger side driveshaft that was jammed/rusted into the hub.

I tried hitting it,soaking it overnight with Duck oil, using a hub puller on it in the hope to force the inner of the shaft out, Pressing it and in the End heating it and banging it with a 4lb lump hammer!! and thats the only way it was going to come out.

I ended up destroying a nut and the end of one my TT drive shafts and broke my puller :( .

After removing the Drive shaft i could see that the splined end of the shaft had corroded into the Hub. So when i fiited another Drive shaft i coated it with Copper grease..I suggest you do the same for future reference.

I also attempted to remove the Drivers side shaft in the Hope that one was not corroded in? but that one just came out with a light tap. But i still coated that one with copper grease too just incase..Hth

I do have two TT hubs if you need one! And the bearings are in very good condition! But you will still need to get the Brake Disc Dust Sheild and hand brake shoe Pin off.

I also have a Drivers side TT driveshaft in Good condition if needed. :)

Sounds like we have the same problem, drivers side OK, passenger side stuck.

So can you beat hell out of it without damaging the diff ? I can deal with sacrificing a driveshaft if I have to.

I'll see how it goes.

The dust shield is already history, have to make room for the larger discs. The handbrake shoe pin thing is tight - damn tight, but I think I can get away without removing it.

Well the the hub, driveshaft and lower suspension arm are now all removed as a single assembly. At least now I can stand it on end and see if I can get some Plus Gas to permeate through the splines. Trouble is it's now a lot more difficult to wallop it with the hammer. Will have to see what the Plus Gas does overnight ....

Ahhh been there before Lol? Just watch your toe's :D

So my toes have been fine but my fingers suffered a little. Basically as the final bolt came out and I wiggled the hub assembly free from the suspension I thought it best to prevent it landing on the garage floor and chipping the concrete by putting my hand underneath it ! Won't be doing that again ....

Anyway, so far 36 hours of Plus Gas has had no effect and neither does it seem to have seeped into the splines at all. Going to try and find someone with a press ...

Well after some extreme violence the driveshaft and hub are now separated. One big puller, one can of gas for the blowlamp, one lump hammer and an air impact driver on the puller bolt - easy really ! The spline had rust down the full length and had to be driven all the way out. With lots of cleaning up it will be reusable, I did think for a while that it was bad enough to be scrapped.

Now to the difficult bits ....

There is progress, today the hubs are being modified to match the 350Z calipers, then all have to do is find the time to put it all back together ...

  • Author

May well do that. Time is tight as I'm away oop Nurth this weekend. Looks like I may be blagging the 350 at this rate ...

  • Author
when are you next working on it?

Oooh, slight change of plan - looks like I now have Monday free.

  • Author

Bah, never mind. Still at least I feel I'm making some progress at last ...
