I saw this TV in Tesco for £899 - seemed cheap for a Sony.

It's £829 delivered from that website.

Anyone know why it's priced more like a less well regarded brand? Is it an old model or something?

Is it a good buy?

I like Sony as my current Sony TV has lasted about 20 years.

Not true sony make thier own stuff and is made in the same factory as panasonic.

You are right though about one thing, most others like samsung, lg etc do tend to be the same panel with a different badge on or slightly different casing but sony dont do that ;)

Unfortunatley your wrong mike, I have two 32" lcd panels both samsung and both using sony screens and components. You can either pay £1000 for a sony screen or buy the exact same tv for £700 but without the sony print on it (My TV was bought 2yrs ago so not sure if its still the case)

Theres loads of companys that share there components, like motorola using nokia parts in their phones and so on.

Someone else told me this:

Both this (the Philips 42") and the old Sony Bravia already mentioned are only 720p native. Each can probably scale a 1080i picture down to fit, but with some loss of picture quality. Neither can do 1080p.

Sony's PS3, for example, will only play Bluray films in 1080p or 1080i. If you don't (or can't) pick the comparatively crappy scaled 1080i option, both of these TVs will display in 576p if you're lucky. This is only enhanced definition, one step up from standard definition (576i).

Which is why they're flogging them off cheap

Sony & Samsung have a joint LCD manufacturing company, as do Matsushita/Hitachi/Toshiba.

There aren't actually that many companies that make big LCD panels.

i must admit i saw the latest sony lcd at my local HC shop when i picked up my new speakers and it was playing in true 1080 running the new sony bluray player which isnt out till autumn and it was mind blowing how good it was :)

with regards to panels i always thought lg made 90% of all the panels, mainly for samsung etc and the sonys were made by matsushita or what ever there called which own sony, panasonic etc??

but ive been wrong before and no doubt wrong again LOL

I personally don't think the upscaling on the sony models is that good. If you're putting HD sources through it it'll look good but playing normal dvds and tv through it i think you'll find you'll be disapointed

Here we go... The best LCD for the money at the mo and will match yer PS3... Even beats Sony's effort at £1799.99... This Samsung has an amazing spec and yes Sony and Samsung are made in the same factory's!! I Know!!!

LOL - I bought the "Sony effort" earlier this year. Got to say I'm very impressed with the performance so far  Must admit that I've mainly been using it as my PC monitor until I get my Sky+ box moved. Mmmm.. Sky HD for £149 installed...

Look at all the money bags on the forum. i paid £400 for mine its a 32" lcd screen and to be perfectly honest its fantastic for what i need it for  :hyper:

I paid just over £1k for my non-LCD 32" about 5 years ago, right before LCD's kicked off and devalued it to nothing overnight. I probably could'nt give it away now !

i had to get one as my 12 year old one blew up. i wasn't going to buy a crt telly seeing as the prices of lcd ones are soo good. like i said for £400 im very impressed and i did compair them to the other more expensive ones inc the bravia. it was running the hd loop in the shop along with the others and it was up there with the best of them for picture quality.

I bought a 50" Samsung plasma about 5 weeks ago and loved it to start with but when i was watching a film with my wife the other night i remember saying that its no better than the 32" Toshiba we had and that after a while you don't really notice the size difference. Only got it because it was £1100 and thought it was a bargain and i don't even have HD so a bit pointless.

lol how long you been looking for a telly m8?

tvs are like pcs the minute you buy them your behind the times

so like Hellraiser you need to go INTO the shop and see the thing for yourself

work out what you want it for what your prepared to buy, and how long its got to do the job for, i'm a fiend for new technology and we have 4 plasmas dotted round the house and 4 sky boxes (2 hd)

unless your going to invest in sky hd or blu-ray then you have no need to go top end, as BIGSSS says above its a bit pointless buying the best for the money when a telly half the price will give the same results, if your thinking of getting hd etc then you need to look at the best tv your prepared to buy

to do the job, but also know when you buy, in a month or so, the telly is going to drop or a newer model WILL be out lol

Called into currys yesterday to see the phillips but sold out but was shown this one .Look at the saving if you buy on the net

£688 for a 42" LG HD ready plasma - now that sounds very very good to me. I'm very tempted.

Are plasmas ok?

Everything seems to be LCD these days.

  • Author

Balls - don't like all that heavy / fragile / requires professional mounting stuff for the plasma. Would have probably got one of those 42" LGs otherwise.

Best to have all the facts! :)
