well after lots of cursing and damaged hands and most of the morning I can confirm that a carbing rear strut brace does not fit a convertable Z.

 

someone welded a large chunk of boot in the way, off to buy a bigger club hammer......

This might sound like a really stupid thing for me to say, but........

 

Why the hell do you need a strut brace on the rear, when you already have extra steelwork bracing from one side to the other in exactly the correct place?? ;) I thought the idea of a rear strut brace is to give extra strength to the rear strut towers (ie; same as for the front), but if you already have it, what's the point in putting another one in there? :confused:

Add to that the fact that 300zx has wishbone suspension, so the "strut towers " are only a mounting point for the shock. So any flex there won't affect the wheel geometry. Strut braces, in my opinion are only really affective with cars fitted with McPherson struts, where any movement of the top mount will affect the steering geometry.

 

Had a look in the manual and there's already a tie-bar between the two upper suspension mounts on the rear sub-frame.

to me the car seems to flex and twist to much, thought it might stifen things up. could be wrong. the bit of metal in the way is the divide between the boot and the rest of the car and doesnt look like it does much for stiffness

Ian, a strut brace won't stop chassis flex, I afraid the only way to cure it would be a full, suspension mount to suspension mount roll cage, or weld a roof back on LOL.

Chassis flex is the "nature of the beast" with a convertible I'm afraid.
