laptop power socket's gone iffy.... can I mend it?

It only works when I wiggle the wire as it enters the computer. Mostly it's not connected unless I wiggle it right.

I guess there's a bad connection in the power in socket in the computer.

Can you get these things mended?

Could I try and do it myself?

It's an Acer.

Thanks folks.

These guys supply replacement laptop DC sockets - http://www.aacomputerelec.com/

Acer are listed here. Maybe try an Acer spares supplier in the UK. The repair is usually just a simple plug/solder job onto the main board..

I've fixed a few of these, generally a bit of a fiddly pig to do. What tends to happen is that the central connector under the socket snaps off the board. If you can get a new socket it's a pretty straightforward replacement.

First challenge will be taking the lap top to pieces!

I've positioned a book so it rests on the lead so it's constantly 'plugged in'. Not a brilliant solution though.

It's quite often just one of the legs on the socket works it's way free of the solder with all the movement and just needs soldering over.

Fingers crossed X
