Simple you say its shit itself

 

But it is only in 2nd and 4th and when I'm stationary with my foot on the clutch in those two gears (but quieter)

 

Now could a noisey release bearing transmit through to the gearbox while driving, I haven't come across it before but the box feels fine.

its not just a torn rubber gaiter allowing the noise to be transmitted inside when the gearlever is pulled down in that direction is it?

Could be main input rear bearing,just so happens i have a new bearing kit in a box sitting in garage ;)

if the gator proves to be ok, then the following noises prove one or the other

 

clutch pedal down and noise (release bearing)

clutch pedal up and noise (possible input shaft bearing) try a fluid change with some decent oil. other than that its wear and tear and will be fine for thousands of miles in any case.

Ok bud no problem,as for another Z,think the new house purchase as put paid to any motor that costs more than a fiver to run :rofl: ,may be putting up the 540 for sale soon,will be only 10mins walk to work,and the 540 rarely used weekends,not much point in having it,wont do it any good as it will never warm up :(

Another option for noise when you depress the clutch is having a twin/triple plate clutch, as the extra clutch plate rattles when depressed!
