Anyone had this experience before? just had a manual gearbox fully rebuilt with a complete set of new bearings but now it sounds noisy as if the input shaft bearing are gone... ie when you depress the clutch it sounds so quiet but once the clutch comes up it makes a worn bearing sound :(

Not happy as it cost £££'s and not to mention the labour cost to take it out and put back in!!

could be the crank is moving and is putting stress on the box causing the bearings to go. the labour for remove and re-fit should be about £100

Is it definitely the box making the noise and did anyone put oil in it after it was re-built ?

Well can't be the release bearing because that was also replaced, approx 3 litres of oil was put in after the gearbox was fitted to the car, pretty certain the noise is coming from the gearbox:(

Also whilst the work is under gaurantee it's just the shear hassle of taking everything out again:( beginning to fear the worst already!!

y didnt you just get a second hand box matey ?

does the noise get quieter when you push the clutch and does it do it in all gears ?

Thing is Paul the gearbox that was rebuilt was very good to start with, but had a very very slight whine in 3rd/4th gear and I just thought I would get it rebuilt while I did the clutch!! The noise it makes now was not there before!! Even when the gearbox rebuilders took the box apart they said there was very little wrong with but I told them to re-check the bearing for the 3rd and 4 the gear and they eventually agreed there was some wear, so I told them to replace all the bearings whilst they had it apart... so the idea was to have a 110% perfect box... just hadsn't quite worked out that way!!

If the noise goes when you push the clutch that would usually indicate first motion shaft,or layshaft bearing.fire it straight back buddy.make them take it back out i would.

Under the centre console there is a rubber seal that makes a very tight seal between the body and the gear lever, alot of noise comes through here if this isn't fitted properly, fitting this properly on mine cured a noise which i originaly thought was the release bearing.

I have the same thing with my box after I got a manual conversion. Cost me £500 to get it taken down and back on a truck so I never sent it back but I wished that I did now.

uprated bearings internals will be noisy

is it uprated or OEM ?

had the same problem with my gearbox when i rebuilt it with every bearing replaced, and had to press the bearings in, end float was back at th same point as old shims but i DARN'T put any more pressure on so i got chatter fom gears on idle afterwards, got pissed off and bought a low mileage box 33k on..........guess what still had some chatter, seems to be std on these shite boxes like 2nd gear snatches even with brand new synco and baulk rings ffs which I also fitted, but that was before fitting dextron2 oil which made it a hell of a lot better after dumping that overated mt90 tractor oil from the yanks at £75 quid.

lol

Thks for all the input, i'll get on the phone to the company first thing tomorrow and see what they have to say... I was hoping to put a post up recommending them as they collected and delivered the gearbox free of charge and do give a 12,000 miles warranty, also they have an excellent reputation, so just maybe it was my bad luck that I got the "new guy" to do mine lol Also is there any such notion as "bedding in" time for when a gearbox has a complate set of new bearings? sounds silly I know but the noise was not there first...

Neither of those problems are normal. Only problem you tend to get is crunching between 4th and 5th as it has a weaker syncro than the other gears..but thats still rare and with higher mileage.
