Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine's horsepower without the loss in power caused by the gearbox, generator, differential, water pump and other auxiliaries. Thus the prefix "brake" refers to where the power is measured: at the engine's output shaft, as on an engine dynamometer. The actual horsepower delivered to the driving wheels is less. An engine would have to be retested to obtain a rating in another system. The term "brake" refers to the original use of a band brake to measure torque during the test (which is multiplied by the engine RPM and a scaling constant to give horsepower).

It's a term invented by James Watt who wanted to define a power rating. He used it based on horses moving coal. Think it was something to do with the weight shifted v's the time.

I am not sure this is quite correct. BHP measured on a dynometer does loose power through the transmission.

 

The term brake is used because the rollers act as a brake and have a known resistance. so it takes a known force to turn the rollers you can work out the torque of the engine at any given rpm. I think the equasion to work out the BHP is (Torque * RPM)/5252 which is why the lines for bhp and torque meet at that point on a graph.....

Horse Power is defined as the amount of distance a HORSE can move 1 bushal (it has a weight but I dont know it ) 1 foot up a 1 foot incline over time. (W*incline)/Time something like that, been a while since i ddi my mechananical engeneering quals.

 

Brake Horse power defines the amount of force required to stop a wheel Hence why people have higher BHP figures is they use softer rubber etc.

Wikipedia is nearly right. It's wrong as "brake" has nothing to do with the point at which is measured (i.e. at output shaft or wheels). You can very well have bhp measured at the wheels.

 

It's right as the original method of measuring it was - as you say - using a brake on an output shaft to measure the torque etc etc etc
