Hi everyone, been a while but after having two RX-7's I'm back in a Z and lovin it :)

I've got Tonyc's black shorty, bought it from cona2k on Saturday. Had some problems so took it to Protech in Nailsea. The water leak turned out to be a short heater matrix hose which had split. Also had a misfire which they cured by cleaning the coil packs and other connectors. Now it goes like stink! Just about holds traction in first gear, raise the boost slightly and it spins and wants to go sideways!

Tony I hope you read this as I wondered if you could shed some light on a couple of problems please?

Firstly do you know what ECU it's got? Did you fit the boost contoller as turned off it boosts at .7 bar and I wondered if it's been mapped to handle more boost or not?

Secondly, the Hicas light comes on after a few miles and stays on. Any ideas on that?

Thirdly, the car skips to the left when going over potholes, wondered if you have any idea on what's been done suspension/bushes wise or what might need doing?

Fourthly, braking hard from about 100 the car shudders badly, I think if I cure the skipping problem that may cure the braking shudder at the same time as the discs look nearly new. Anyway, any info appreciated Tony.

Anyone want to buy a silver RX-7 type R, '92 30k miles since rebuild, basic mods 0-60 about 4.5sec, serviced every 3k and no faults. Will be appearing on ebay in the next week or so.

Welcome Back Trev. Take her along to SWZ Performance (bit of a bonus since you last had a zed....a 300zx Specialist (and the only club authorised Z speciaist garage!) right on your doorstep....just down the road in Rooksbridge....Paul@SWZ is already familar with the car too.

Hicas light usualy means low PAS fliud however from your description it sounds like either the steering wheel is not on straight (or if its aftermarket it may not have a Hicas boss), could also be a problem with the Hicas rack.

I may be wrong but I will ask Tony if I see him today but I think the hicas has been eliminated on that one so check the rear joints for the skipping on pot holes, I seem to remember him saying he had taken it out and even the switches behind the stearing wheel.

The brakes shudder I would say are the tension rod bushes

Hi buddy,

any pics of your REX?.. What sort of money are you looking for?

.

.

. Thanks..

Hi Trevz, having fun with it  nearly bought it back but would of meant divorce proceedings :D ,any way will do me best to help with questions, but as its had couple of owners since me can only go on what i know.

First off Hicas totaly gone from steering colum.

The rear springs are new AVO 30mm lowerd(still have fronts in box if you interested)

ECU is "Racing Club" JDM Tuning Shop (fitted in Japan prior to importing)

Hicas light prob low oil as Scrawni states,as for skipping on rear prob subframe or lower arm bushes(prob been highlighted more due to lowering/stiffer rear.)

Judder at front from around 100 could be lower arm bush as they tend to go with age or tension rod bush's.Can you feel it through the pedal,if so could be warped disc but they are not that old(couple thousand miles tops)

Boost controller, fitted by me,dont go above 10 psi for saftey,i did go to 12psi to check the boost instal, i did not want to do any damage until i got it to Thor for checking on higher boost, but ran out of time,(could be running too lean, maybe not, but not worth the risk to go to say 14-15psi,which is why to resit temptation i would run with it off, boost is stock, well a tad over actualy near to 10psi).

As for fast, well first time i bought it it was hairy machine, then sold it,lad blew up the motor, spent thousands on another engine, then box went, then exhaust, legal wrangles with not paying for work done, eventualy he got car back, threw in the towel as he had huge storage charges,in 5 years of me first getting it then for second time, it had done less than 1kmiles.You have a nice Z there bud, look after it,be safe. :)

Thanks for all replies, can't stop now as have to be out 5 minutes ago lol but briefly yes I'm from Burnham and used to have the yellow Z. I'll post a link to my Rex soon.

Thanks for the info Tony, had some light grey smoke from right tailpipe today as per cona2k's post, bumped into PaulSWZ who saw me parked on side of road (very helpfull thanks for stopping) and we think prob turbo seal.

Trev.

Yes it prob is seals, was the smoke evident when engine warming up still, once tubs reach temp they will not smoke(hopefully),nothing to worry about realy, dont forget its got virtually no back pressure with that zorst(loud mother aint it :D )if you fit a system that gives more pressure symptoms will probably dissappear.

Tony, yes it's only happened once when I just moved the car a few yards and it smoked when I started it again 20 mins later. When warmed up not a puff though, so not a prob as yet.

Had the horn go off non stop last night, it's got an old Momo steering wheel and the wiring broke inside the column, took 10 mins to shut it up! Quite embarrassing lol, one couple stopped tought I was having a heart attack! All sorted now though.

Had the car on a four poster today, couldn't see any play in any of the bushes and joints though, but rear nearside damper seems a bit weak. Wonder if that would cause the rear end skip?

Was told there was an autobox cooler fitted, but from what I can see it still has the stock cooler up the side of rad?

I think things went down hill a bit after you sold it Tony! Someone sold the targa bags and floor mats, drivers window doesn't work, mirrors don't work, ciggy lighter has been ripped out and broken surround. Hopefully all be fixed next week though.

The MOT runs out in a couple weeks, do you know if there's any wiring for a rear fog light? Couldn't see any trace of it or even find a switch somewhere?

Thanks for your help, you know the car better than anyone! It certainly goes well, about half as quick again as my last yellow Z!! Just about holds traction in first gear with boost controller off!

Cheers, Trev.

Trevz, sounds like a few niggles there but as you say very minor,as for rear fog,i am sure it comes on when the front fogs full on,allways been the same, uses stock rear light cluster, try it and let me know,as for oil cooler was told it had it done when new box went in,prob a little fib,to be honest i did not check that out when i got it back second time, good idea to get bigger one me thinks. As for your horn, prob my fault as i wired it up,prob caught and streched on boss, the Momo is a bit old school, got it for £10 at Trax 2003,like it tho.

Thanks for that, I checked it out and yes inner brake lights come on with front fogs, my last Z had a seperate ugly fog hanging under rear bumper so I was looking for wiring for similar, one less job now though! Wanted to ask you something else but can't remember at all now so next time :)

Cheers, Trev.

most likely the shock absorber then, but worth checking for play in the wheels, this would indicate either hicas, normally the ball joint which connects to the suspension from the hicas arms.
