hi peeps i got my zed back the other day after 3 months of being off the road however i fitted a short shift last october as my gearstick was goosed very floppy and when i took it out it was all in bits so i used the pics off the forum and it went in a treat...it was however a bit stiff and clunky but i thought it was because it was new

anyway i went out for a razz last night and when i got home and stopped to drop the missus off i couldnt get it into gear it was as if i wasnt even pressing the clutch i switched off the engine and engaged " panic mode " and when i started it up again it went into gear ok.....i tried the usual 1st gear handbrake on and lift clutch slightly and the back end squatted ok and nearlt stalled do ya reckon it was because i was giving it the teddies or is it summat more serious

one thing i have noticed is if i boot it and go from 3rd to 4th with the short shift it does sometime make a small grinding noise but i put that down to me lifting off clutch too quickly as it doesnt seem to do it if i do it slowly

sorry for the war and peace version but i just spent 400 squid on her and im potless

many thanx in advance any advise appreciated

the 3rd gear syncro is renowned to giving problems with crunching into gear especially with old boxes as it is weak.

Did you change the bushes on the gear stick when you fitted the short shifter, worn bushes will make the gear stick floppy

yes mate it all came with the kit i still have the scars lol dont know of anyone else thats fitted a short shift so im unsure as to the clunkyness of the shifter is normal or if something else is wrong ....the original shifter almost felt as if it wasnt attached to anything and dropped to bits when i took it out but it did change the gears smoothly

Does anyone on here double clutch? I tried it, slow but smooth

yeah i do sometimes but only when i have to lol when the red mist desends and theres a chav in a nova lol

I fitted one.

I think the lack of bushes in the old shifter were taking up the looseness of the linkage (does that make sense). although mine now is very short and responsive, a lot of people have reported grinding etc after fitted the kit. I get a little more than before if changing gear too fast but nothing i'm worried about.

hi mate

do you find that your shifter is a bit clunky when you change...like you really have to push it into gear not hard but still needs more effort than a stock one

yeah i know what you mean.

It will need more effort as the bushes make it tighter (will get better in time)

also as the shaft is shorter it takes more effort to lever the linkage (was the same on the one i fitted in my old rover turbo)

cheers dudes i appreciate the advise...so what your saying is i need to razz it more lol

seriosly tho many thanx

the problem with short shifters are most of the kits have nylon bushes these tend to make the shift real stiff  try undoing the nut slightly you may nipped it up to tight, also the fact its shorter which means more energy to move it and less leverage

i removed mine as it was more of a hinderance than a modification

i think the ideal thing to use is a a softer type bush to sit between the attachment also some grease around the nut and bush may help ease gear changes

First, let's clear up some misconceptions running around the 300ZX world about short-throw shifters. Seems a lot of folks are installing shortened stock (or aftermarket) shifters and calling them a "short-shifter." They are not true short-throw shifters—they reduce the shift travel by lowering the height of the shift knob. A true short-throw shifter is longer than a stock shifter—the lengthened portion is below the control socket (fulcrum). The shift knob will remain at stock height; in fact the only way you will know that it's a short-shifter is when you shift—it will be a shorter throw.

I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

Cant comment on zed ones as mines an auto, but the Mrs has a B&M short shifter on her clio and the change is great, a bit notchy but thats to be expected with the tuffer bushes. Getting it into reverse is the tuffest, but thats bound to be the case as its used less.

Maybe some.....however all the ones I have seen and fitted to the 300zx have all been True Short shifters.

Has no one even thought about the fact that the clutch might just need bleeding?

Shifting up to 3rd fast is tricky. Always needs more clutch but if you remember to do that its not a big deal.

I had these problems when fitting mine.

I undone the nut a lil to make i looser, as it was way too tight, done the job but..... a few weeks later i lost all gears basicly i found out the nut had come off and the pin slide out as a loosened it off so i went to my local nuts n bolts store and bought a magic one which don't come loose it has some plastic thread on the end or something.

Also mine never crunched before fitted the short shifter then once fitted it also crunched in 4th it just amplifies a problem already there but apparently fitted Redline Mt-90 gearbox oil may sort that out. something i keep meaning to do.

Nylock nut ;)

Still, not being able to get any gears would suggest a problem with the clutch - ie not disengaging. Can you get gears with the engine turned off?

lol i meant the gearstick went floppy as the pin had fallen out, i felt a right twit once i realised what i had done. So i couldn't put it gear as it wasn't connected to the gearbox.

Sorry post wasn't aimed at you lol ;)

>> the problem with short shifters are most of the kits have nylon bushes

just re-use the (brown) stock bushes...the nylon bushes that come with most of the sh.shifter kits are near worthless.

also make sure you fill the joint of the shifter with grease, which prevents the shifter from rattling/clunking too much.

when i took mine off, i only had half of one side of the stock bushes left!

i also loosened the nut off slightly, but changed it for a nylock one, no problems since.
