the one that came from my ISP was pants so used my own, why does the modem go in to handshaking mode all the time, also if someone calls me sometimes the connection goes again!!

any ideas, im fed up with phoning talk talk there all foreign and understand nil about PCs :mac1:

Re: the connection being lost when taking voice calls...I take it you have a filter?

sounds like a filter problem. Also you are using the shittiest ISP around, what can you expect.

^^^ cheers for the advice^^^

And yep i have a filter!

As Clarkey said, you could try another filter. They do have a tendancy to go wrong from time to time. I've replaced the one in my office as it slowed right down and lost connections and everything. For the cost of them, it might be worth trying another, just to see if it's that which is the problem.

TALK TALK IS SHIT, no ther word for them

We were on Wanadoo/Orange but they fooked us about, we are now on BT up to 8 meg but rarely get over 3 meg

i'm with talk talk to, my connection drops out alot too. Ranted to them and they said must be spyware. Gave them both barrels via an email and they said they would have t send an engineer out, not replied to that one yet but they are fekking useless. never had any probs with toucan before.

talk talk are one of the worst broadband providers in the uk and now own aol uk they work on limiting bandwidth and put you in a que for bandwidth, they were named as worst broadband provider in 2005, i'm with plus net (now owned by bt) never get 8mb but usually hit 5-6 meg most of the time but i am only 1/4 mile from the exchange

iff ime not mistaken greg ime sure our kid has got 10meg for £10 per month off sky and it goes down his bt phone line

plusnet are almost as bad as talktalk tbh, i'd stay well away if I were you.

We have got the same router and we are with BT. We have had no probs with connection/speed at all.

seriously have a look at that link

http://www.ispreview.co.uk

it shows all the good and bad providers.

If your after unthrottled p2p (torrents) theres only a few that'll sort ya.

on that link you can go to any providers forum and read reviews / problems / good bits etc

vispa looks good

as does sky so far?

looks like talk talk certainly fall short in the CS dept LOL

so will see how my connection speed develops currently 2mb but im sure peak times will alter that :(

If your ISP is from a company that uses the phone line to send broadband then the further you are from the telephone exchange the weaker the signal will be and the more people online at the same time the signal will decrease more, thats why they always advertise speeds "up to" 8Mb but unless you are right next door to the exchange and no-one else is online you will never get 8Mb. The best solution is if its available to you is get Virgin media Broadband as if you pay for 8Mb thats what you get without varying bandwidth.
