More than one million* British motorists are now on the brink of losing their licences, according to research by Direct Line Car Insurance.

There are currently 6,000 speed cameras monitoring drivers in the UK and currently 4.5 million** drivers have points on their licence for speeding.

One in five (21 per cent) of these drivers are one conviction away from a driving ban – an increase of four per cent in the past 12 months.

This means in the last year alone, over 215,000*** extra drivers have put themselves just one conviction away from a driving ban.

And this could affect the livelihood of 14 per cent of drivers who would lose their jobs if their licence were taken away – a figure which rises to one in five among male motorists.

Despite speed cameras only being launched 13 years ago, 92**** per cent of those receiving motoring convictions in the last two years are for speeding and fines can be as much as £2500 for a first time offence.

Within the past three years drivers have paid out over £300 million***** in speeding tickets. The research found that nearly half of the convictions given to drivers caught speeding were over the limit by less than 10mph.

Under the new graduated penalty points system drivers doing less than 10 mph are likely to receive less points than the current three. The Direct Line research found that three quarters (75 per cent) of drivers support the Government’s proposal, which will replace the current system with a points scheme dependent on how much the driver has exceeded the limit by.

Emma Holyer, Direct Line’s Motor Spokesperson said: “With the advent of speed cameras and the introduction of points for being caught for driving using a mobile phone, we urge motorists not to break the law as they could face numerous consequences such as killing or injuries themselves or others, disqualification, job loss and financial loss.

“We fully support the graduated penalty point system and urge the Government to bring this implementation forward.”

If you have written evidence in court from your employer saying you will lose your job if you get disqualified, you are almost certain to not be convicted.

I think this graduated system is a little more common sense - although I reserve judgment until I see the scale (i.e. ok 2 points for less than 10mph over is better, but do you get 1 point for doing just 2mph over?? )

Would have thought you still get the 10% allowace for incorrect speedos etc

well yes but you dont owt for nowt, not with this government :hurl:

Yep, I can confirm that ! : :o

My ex boss racked up 12 points, and so he wouldnt lose his job, the magistrate said he could have a conditional ban for 12 months, which meant he was allowed to drive for work only!

I asked my bro about that, hes a policeman, said it wasnt true. He also told me what the speed cameras are set to but i cant remember. I do know that if u go over 96mph its an instant ban.

This does work!

A few employees at my company are on 12 points now - I have done a fair few letters to courts up and down the country saying I will have to lay off field staff if they are unable to drive. However some courts have said that you can only plead this hardship once.

I'd say that 10% of or drivers have no points, with the majority on about 6.

I think different regions have diffrent parameters TBH.

Some cameras are set at "excessive speeds" like the one on the A40 near Uxbridge, Middlesex. It is a dual carriageway and the camera is set at around 90mph.

However there is one on the A40 coming into High Wycombe from West Wycombe, just after the speed drops from 40 to 30. That is set at 34mph.

Richard ;)

Dont you believe it!!

One of our driver's lost his license, after collecting enough points!!

ive just read in the papers that they'll be charging speeding motorists an extra £15 for... more cameras? improving the roads? road safety campaigns for young children? no...

Victims of domestic violence.

And in this very thread I said the government will never give something for nothing (ie. lower speeding points bands) and I was right.

Group buy on a hitman anyone?

Its the goverments policy to reduce the amount of drivers on the Road, Public Transport isnt working so they ban you points at a time & we pay for the priviledge.

firstly the whole of the uk is one conviction away from a ban

u do over 100 mph on motorway and get caught and its a ban so all that in first post is *****x

You can still keep your liscene if caught doing over a ton but it's unlikely you will.

But what it say on the first post show's just how many of use are now in danger from the possibility of losing out to these forest of camera's.

Not that I have any points, as yet just not been caught on the motorway pressing the go faster pedal
