bit of a stupid question really but i was checking my radiator water today and it smelt like metal. have i got any thing to worry about or is it just that the radiator is 17 years old and a bit rusty inside?

Sniffing the radiator water you say, not one of my past times i must say,

nevertheless corrosion mate, hence the metal smell as you put it

Like Dutchy says, it sounds like corrosion. You might want to flush out your whole system and if funds stretch maybe a new rad and use ironised water with antifreeze not tap water as tap water has corrosive properties in it
