Never had a car fail on this issue before, but my local MOT station have failed a 300ZX because the dip beam is "switched off" whilst the hi-beam is on... what is the easiset solution to remedy this and also do we have any MOT testers on the club who can confirm whether this is an MOT failure issue!! Thx Lee

Also now have the same issue with a R33 Skyline which does the same!!

hmm, i would say its a misinterpertation!

it states:

"Switch on each main-beam headlamp & check that all main beams are switched off by one switch (dip switch) which leaves a matched pair of dipped beam headlamps switched on"

reason for rejection:

"A headlamp does not operate immediately when selected on dipped beam or on main beam"

or

"operation of the dip switch does not extinguish all main beam headlamps, and leave on at least 1 pair of dipped-beam headlamps"

Paul C is the Top MOT man on here. PM him for some help.

It can be changed by messing with the dim (or whatever it's called) relay, I looked into it a while ago but never got round to changing it. I think some of the guys with HIDs have done this to preserve the life of the HID bulb. However, having said that the car should not fail for that otherwise we would all have to mod the way our lights worked.

I'd tell them that's the way every 300ZX in this country works and to go read the testing instructions again.

If they won't pass it say you're taking your business elsewhere as there's nothing wrong with it and many cars work like that.

Thks so much!!, even spoke to SVA UK LTD who said that they do not change the wiring systems on Skyline's and 300ZX's imported into the UK!! I think the MOT station are just interpreting the guidelines the wrong way!!

yep im mot tester and your mot guy is getting something wrong there, defo not a fail for dip beams staying on,quite a few cars have dip beams on all the time not just z's . try pointing this out to examiner and if he still insists its a fail ask for an appeal test form in which case vosa will come out and do the test and will also reprimand the tester appropriatly for failing the car incorrectly.

right ended up phoning up VOSA at the MOT station who confirmed that it is definately not a fail, so the MOT station had to eat their words lol, so pleased and many thanks for all the input guys:)

Easiest way would be to wire the earth point of the dipped beam bulb to another earthing location that will stop the dipped beam going off when you switch to full beam usefull for HID conversions.

Can you tell me if it is a fail if one of your side repeaters is not working?

Yes, all warning lamps fitted to the vehicle must work.

Dont most car switch dip beam off when using high beam?

A 472 bulb (3 pin twin filament) only lights one filament at at time, thus switching off lo beam to put on high.
