Hi all,

Looking to get a larger unit for backing up and saw this http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?detail=full&ModuleNo=115248&doy=21m3#more_info Any opinions on it or any recomendations on a unit?

Thanks

Vijay

I have the 320 gig version of this and it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Cheap, mass storage, reasonably quick, quiet in operation and looks pretty good on the desktop

My only gripe is that it doesn't have an on/off switch on the unit so you have to turn it off at the wall socket or take the lead out of the back of it.

i also have the 400 gig maxtor and a 400 gig freecom

both work spot on, as Apache says the maxtor doesnt have an on off switch

and because they run so silent i often forget to unplug from the back, the freecom does have a on off switch and REALLY bright blue light, so cant fail to see when its on, i have a few comps, and have a lead in each so makes it REALLY easy to switch between machines, they are a good price now from when i bought mine m8;)

I've got that freecom one.Works fine.Only slight gripe is that you have to format it to put more than 4 gig at a time when you first get it.Only takes about an hour though. :D They have that one on fleabay too.

Just build your own external drive

get a caddy for about 20 quid and then stick a hdd in it

at least that way you know you have a decent quality drive in it

no cheap hitachi rubbish - seagates every time

ive got 5 of the 320 gig version of the maxtor ... worth buying as u know what make of drive youre getting inside .. samsung / hitacha are crap IMO

I've got the one of the Maxtor One Touch external drives and it has a backup button on it that's really useful - one press and the PC is backed up.

These Western Digital My Book 500GB drives are pretty good value for £98:
