if it is steam, check your water level as I just had the same happen to me and it emptied the rad. It was the small water hoses that go to the heater matrix right where you have circled on the back of the engine  . I still have the cuts and bruises on my hands from changing them lol !

Check for Brake or Clutch master cylinder leaks. Brown fliud could also be Engine coolant from one of the Plenum or turbo feed hoses or Heater matrix pipes.

If unable to find the leak yourself get it to your nearest garage before putting any more miles on her.

ye i think it is steam, it does smell of burning, but i hear a sizzle,

its like pouring cold water on a hot pan

ill get it checked out tomorrow, is it something serious? the engine was recently rebuilt and doesnt appear to be overheating, temp gauges etc are normal and the engine wasnt that hot to touch

Start the engine and then look at the far left behind the plenum, pull the wires and hoses out of the way if you have to and see if you can see any water spurting or dripping out down there.

probably coolant dripping onto the turbo from the turbo coolant hose, quite common.
