Now its not something that I would reccomend doing at home but there must be a place that can do it.

 

I have a couple of rear standard springs and want to take about 2-3 inches out of them to drop the arse of me car down then put them on some nice shocks and see what happens.

 

Any ideas guys

Buy some ready made proggressive springs, cutting original ones will at best give uncertain results and at worse lead to forward and back see saw action / bottoming out / instability.

 

Without increasing the tension rate of the spring shortening it will change the designed rebound and arrest ability, and now with kits available from just over £100 it is not really worth bothering to be honest.

Some compelling thoughts for not doing it, I just want to keep the same sort of spring rate and as all the lowering springs I have seen are uprated I thought of shortening stock ones.

You can get some "made to order " ones from Mike at MJP.

 

I will probably need to go down this route too as I suspect the Eibachs I have will be far too highy rated to allow proper weight transfer on launch.

what you have to understand is that, lowered springs are actually made lowered they aint just cut down springs, thye are hardend and lowered springs

If you cut coils out of the spring to shorten it then you will automatically be making it stiffer, in proportion to the number of coils removed.

Std springs are already progressive therefore if you cut coils off then you will also make the car stiffer.

 

There is no problem with doing this as long as you keep it within reason and if the spring "tail" (the end of the spring) still locates in the correct part of the shock bodie then it will also pass any MOT or safety inspection.

 

I have used both cut springs and "proper" lowering springs on my s13 in the past and I have to say that I ended up selling the "proper" ones and just running the cut ones!! it handled far better and the ride was nicer!! it also passed an MOT with these cut ones!.

Sounds like a bad idea for the reasons stated! just buy some soft lowering springs! as said before they can be picked up for under £100.
