Just got the old girl backon the road. Filled up with Sainsbury super unleaded and went for nice drive. Fine that day so of to work next day to show off the new paint job. All way there everything was fine. After work I decided to clean the car along with the engine. Only squirted the engine with hose but now it seems like it is permanently overfuelling. It runs fine on idle but all the way home I could not put foot right down as it spluttered and had real lack off power but if I back off a little it goes momenterily.

Spent all day yesterday taking all connecters off and cleaning them and spark plugs but no joy.

It is now 2 days later so would have thought if the water got into anything it would have dried off but it still the same. I dont think the petrol problem reached Sainsbury but now am a bit worried.

Any ideas greatfully appreciated.

It was not a good idea to put water on the engine, i guess thats where your problem is,something has got wet which should not have.

well iknow i won't be getting vents in the bonnet now!

  • 1 month later...

did you ever sort this problem? i recently bought a jap spec tt manual which is overfuelling like a b*tch and wont let me run more than 10psi without complaining, i tried a different chip and its even worse wont go over 5psi now!

What age is the car?

What colour are the injectors?

What mods has the car got?

i would have said air filter but that would be the opposite (running rough on idle and smoothing out upon accelleration) [just realises its an oldish thread but posts anyway]

Boost leak

Boost leak

Would that cause overfueling?? I know when the piston stuck in my dump valve i didn't notice over fueling. Then again I was that anoyed I proberbly wouldn't have unless it was running out the pipes.

car used to be CADpauls smoothed Z,unknown chip, hks evc1, hks blow off valves, hks induction kit, custom exhaust 3inch system from turbos back, uprated intercoolers ummmm think thats it, car is H reg with 47k on the clocks al nip out nd try to see colour of injectors, av got the battery disconnected at the minute coz after fitting new chip (supposedly based on a mines ecu map) the engine management light keeps flickering on

had it at a local place on the rollers yesterday and he said fuelling is fine on tickover and midrange but if you floor it it just throws petrol in, but then again he told me it wasnt chipped but when i looked its got the socket fitted to fit the chip, exhaust fumes are a bit black and the back of the car keeps gettin covered in soot

Boost leak

Andy's right on this one, that’s the same thing my car was doing and I changed the plugs did a full service, timing belt the full works. It came down to a pipe on the turbo was loose. I just put it on properly and the car was spot on.

sorry if i sound dumb but if it had a boost leak wouldnt the gauge drop?

You would think so bud but it didn’t on mine, instead of the pipe been over the lip it was just sitting on the front of the pipes. The clip was their so it looked like it was on but it wasn’t. Well that’s what it was on mine, I’m still learning about all this stuff so I’m no expert. Just hope what I found might help someone one day and it's something to rule out instead of spending loads of money for nothing. :D

even a blip of the throttle will giv a puff of black smoke :( god i bought this one coz i thought it would be more reliable than the uk spec i have with almost 130k on the clock!

well am goin 2 get sum old gear on and check all hoses, sounds the cheapest option! lol cheers

The airflow meter is registering ALL of the air coming into the turbos but the motor is only getting SOME of it = rich mix. With a leak the turbos will pump more air to reach the same pressure - to a point where the leak is too great.

Check for you boost leak and then get Andy to get his emilator out and burn you a proper chip.

I know mate I've still got some probs on mine and it's only got 57k miles on it.

if it was boost leak then the MAF would read in the correct amount of air and let the ECU fuel appropriately, but then some of the air would be lost via the leak so it would over-fuel.

EDIT: Niggles beat me to it :p

hi matey,

did get mine fixed but it was just water in something as it cleared itself after a few days sitting in garage.

sounds like yours has a boost leak like everone else is saying. can you get the dump valves to operate ok?

i remember mine had a leak for ages with similar problems and it turned out to be one of the large intake pipes going into the plenum which had split, troublewas i couldn't see it was split until it was under pressure.

was thinkin about cutting those outer covers off to check them but they must be somekind of brace to stop them over expanding methinks? yea i can get the bov's to work, the only thing i can really find is either side of the car at the front next to the intercoolers are a couple of parts am guessing are what were the re-circs as they have been blocked off with end cap type thingys but one side has blown its end off (oo-er! :p ) I've tried putting my hand over while the cars running but cant feel any vacuum or owt but i can test it on boost as the gf is round her bro's, the little vacuum hose at the top of it has been blocked off but could the re-circ be leaking when the car comes on to boost?

yes if they are in the same place as the attached pic then they should both be blocked off, there should be 4 holes from the recircs to bloc off. I have problems with keeping anything in the holes as they always seem to blow out after booting the car hard.

sounds like this is the problem, i removed what was left of the bung and the rubber has perished with age and the ends blown out, not sure where am goin 2 find a new 1, al have a scope around d.i.y. places etc tomorrow
