So on Top Gear they said that Hypercars are cars that aren't all about amazing handling and speed but more about showing off and looking silly.

Have they just made this up or what?

I though Hypercars were mega fast supercars like the Koenigsejergrglrng, Mclaren F1, XJ220, Veyron etc.

Whaddya reckon?

Oh yeah and Clarksons got a new phrase to add to 'torques'....

'carbon dioxides'. What!?

Hammond was saying torques too. On the Good bad ugly dvd though Clarkson used the proper units!

I have to say that I was dissapointed about the way Clarkson trivalised the level crossing part of the show.

As I work on the railways it was an oportunity to make a serious point to people that don't realise how dangerous they can be.

Look what that train did to the espace.

Imagin being in that car.

And then he trivalises it by saying you will be safe as long as you wear hi-vis clothing.

It was a dissapointing end.

Darrell

I agree that they could have been more serious but they are in keeping with the show's very light hearted approch

I think the video of the espace said it all, i am certainly not planning on jumping level crossings any time soon!

Yeah the espace was the main bit. I'm noticing that its becoming less and less about cars though entertaining as it is.

I love it when they have to buy things like the supercars for less than 10k and the porches, bangers to get o manchester etc but for me the tractor thing was pretty crap but hammond on the bridge and in the village was good.

If you ever drive one (diablo2, testarossa and a saleen) as I have, it wont take you more than 2 or 3 corners (1 in the wet) for you to realise they are not designed for the track or the road, but for something else.

Neither the 3 I have driven could you by any stretch of teh imagination call a drivers car. Especialy as all 3 had realy strange driving positions.

Go like stink though in a strait line.

IMO a Hypercar is a car that will outclass a supercar which in turn is a car that will outclass a sports car which in turn will out class ............. :D

I thought the level crossing bit was very clever. If it was all sensible and serious I would have thought oh here we go blah blah... but making it light hearted and throwing in a graphic smash up actually keeps peoples attention and makes them think. If it was all serious and sensible we certainly wouldnt be talking about it today would we?

As a railway employee of many years and many courses later I have no doubt that, that film will end up in saftey videos for the use within the railway industry? I think JC and the TG crew used the opportunity and maybe helped finance it? You never know you know.

What do you think has the greater effect on stopping people speed? The girl getting killed at 40 but then surviving at 30 (using that horrible but cool, bones getting fixed backward thing), or the bit at the end that says 'Think!' ?

All we needed to see was the smash. To be honest I shit myself at any level crossing. Train tracks have always scared me for some reason.

I went to hospital on Friday night. Very severe chest pain. Glad to say it wasnt my heart...Phew! BUT! there was a bloke in the bed next to mine who had been involved in a high(ISH) speed car crash and he had shoulder injury. The moans he was making and the pain he must have been suffering when the doctors were trying to straighten him out made me think about the effect of a speed crash? Even though he was under morphene he was still (at times) screeming with pain and pleeding for more morphene. I saw he's X ray on the way out and he's arm had dislocated from he's should and it was bloody awful to witness.

So theres my reason for taking it easy. What you see on the tele dont come close to when you see it in the flesh (sorry about the pun).

I actually thought so too.

I would never dream of jumping level crossing lights and playing chicken with a speeding train. However those that do are just plain stupid.

So, that video to me was tongue in cheek funny but your average moron may just think twice about running through a level crossing in future........

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Did it look like this???? The first two are before relocation and the last one is after relocation.

I'm a Train Driver and its not funny when you hit someone or something, we had a train that hit a tractor going across a level crossing because the farmers worker didnt contact the signalman before he crossed to see if any trains where due, smashed the tractor to bits and the front of the Train, luckerly no one was hurt, the Tractor driver jumped out and the Train Driver ran back through the coach, if he hadnt it would of killed him. Plus ive hit someone in my Train who was running along the track, came round a bend at 100mph and there they where, you cant stop a 200 tonne Train or steer out the way like a car, you just wait for the impact and its a sound you never forget as the body goes under and smashes to bits. I'm sorry to say i didnt find it funny, as much as i like Clarkson, or in good taste for light entertainment, i've seen it too many times and people take too many chances for real.

Thats like a carbon copy of that blokes arm. FFS mate I would hate to suffer that. Are you OK now or does it play you up. I have a ruputured bicep tendon in my right arm and that can be very painful if I forget and try to pick something up. Been waiting over 3 years now for compo to be settled.

I used to be a Train Driver Carl. I know where you are coming from too. I hit someone. Suicide case near Tonbridge in 1979-80. Not a lot left of the bloke either. I have also seen some very nasty cases as I guess you would have too? Polehill tunnel near Sevenoaks. Young bird about 18-19. Charing Cross train hit her and there were bits on the buffer as it pulled into the Cross. We were on spare duties and were called out light engine from Hither Green to investigate. and the stories go on and on. But I will bore you no more........ :headvswal

yep your right there Vini. when i was a shunter at Ilford seen many come in with bits of body hanging off and left over night in the yard untill they get cleaned off, or if i went out to bring one back in, you never forget the smell either. So you was on the Southern, Slade Green? Its all third rail over there so anyone one the track took the chance of getting electricuted if not hit. Hope your chest feels better and was nothing more serious than trapped wind.

Slade Green.......... :D Geeze does that bring back some memories.

I wasnt there mate but knew a good few drivers that were and still are. I was at Hither green as a second man, then I went to Waterloo to get my job as a passed man. I dont know how long you have been in the job. Was you old school or one of the newer boys? I sat the 26 week course at Waterloo south sidings and took control from there. Never quite made the salaried Drivers position. I had a row and left in '86. Regrets ever since although I understand the job has gone down hill now? I am now on the Signals on the London Underground. It aint bad but I cant afford a hypercar (Still in tune with the thread) I much prefer the real Railways. :x:

The chest is OK Muscular Skeletal problem from a previous accident.

no im not BR im what they call a boil in the bag driver shame i wasnt from the old school from what i hear of it those days where much better i hear all the older boys going on about stratford and Kings Cross and how good it was although the money is better now and i cant afford a hypercar either lol but as you say its not the job it used to be, its all about profit now Train operating companies not interested in the work force or passengers its all about keeping the wheels turning and the share holders profits and who they can blame usually the Driver, so they dont get fined by Network Rail, accountants run the Railways now. Its not to late to go back as a Driver you know, no age limit now

Thats interesting mate. I thought the age limit was 45. I might just have a bash at the ol' phyco metric test and see if those poxy dots do me up again. I tried back in '93 to get back but they knocked me back because I dint do the group of dots quick enough. (crap test anyway). I once went to York to the museum and went up front with the driver on the relativaly new HST (125) and he let me have a go as I knew him from when we used to take a train to ACTON a few years ealier. That was great.

Sorry everyone else for the Hi-Jack. But this is serious stuff you know. :D

we are going to have to get together at a meet and have a good old chin-wag mate.

Any chance of a contact number for your depot or are the jobs advertised nationally?

Vini

I'm sorry but how the hell do you get knocked over by a train??? Its big, its noisey and it stays on the tracks! Its not as if its suddenly going to appear out of the blue is it? Unless you have a poor depth perception (then you shouldnt be driving anyway), I cant think how you could hit such a bloody great thing!

People with one eye are allowed to drive though aren't they. And I think the problem is that people think exactly like you said. They actually DO come out of no where in some cases. Or at least 'as good as' considering the speed.

Whenever someone crashes or gets run over or hit by anything for that matter, whatever it was just 'came out of nowhere'.
