Hoping to get some advice from some of the more knowledgeable on here..

I have a 1990 2+2 t-bar turbo in black, 110,000 km on the clock and my sound system is already sorted. Car has cat back nismo exhaust system and that about it.

What i would like to know is what some on here would do with 5k to spend on the car.

The following are my ideas.

Have already booked the car in for a full leather retrim in silver and black including all door cards and panels. £800 all in

Also getting some 18-19 wheels, any ideas?

Then thinking of getting full kit and 4 pot lambo lights.

Going to have a full respray as well just to get away from the aged look.

If anyone on herecan think of things i should do, or have any helpful advice then i would appreciate.

Thanks

well i would look at re-build with uprated turbos. speak to paul at swz at bristol as his prices are good and he knows his stuff. At the end of the day if you get this done then there is no worry of the major things going wrong.

look at my ble z in the pic i had that resprayed for 1400 but paid cash. was lovely colour. same as 350z

was thinking about that, but i wanted to go for the looks first of all and then sort the engine secondly. i know that might be the wrong way to do things...

after spending the money im going to leave £1500-£2000 in the bank incase of any problems arising. The car has also only just had all belts changed less than 500 miles ago and a full service.

what sort of price am i looking at to have the engine strengthened and rebuilt, not performance wise, just to make it a safer engine.

well i would speak to paul but if you pay him cash and leave it with him for 1-2 weeks he will sort you out mate. tell him you spoke to me.

you dont want a all show no go car. plus you dont wanna start whacking cheap power there without sorting out the expensive bits (correct me if im wrong)

when i say cheap power i mean blasting load of boost in an engine and turbo what is 17 years old and standard

to be honest i find the car quick enough for me as it is and its rare i have it out of hold mode....

im not going to wack the boost up or buy anything to try and get a quick rise of 30-40bhp as advertised on ebay. im more interested in just getting the outside and inside looking smart and neat. Ive priced a kit up from zcentre for £750 and fitting and respray will cost me £750 providing i stay the same colour and dont have engine bay and boot and so on painted.

So that with the leather means im looking at £2250. Add the wheels and im looking at around the 3k mark as im owed a favour from someone who works for a wheel company.

What sort of engine work am i going to get for £2k?? as i have never asked about this before, but i didnt imagine i would get a lot done for this price.

cheers

Think about new shocks and springs all round. Maybe new or uprated front barkes.

Then up the boost, re-map, exhaust, air filter.

well 2k will get you somewhere

Can't agree more. The brakes have to be on the list even if you don't upgrade the engine and perhaps do the bushes and springs etc.

Throw in a full set of HIDS as well for good measure and you will have probably done most of your money anyway.

Good luck with it and I hope you end up with what you want.

got to go for the bigger brake option and will probably go with a set of coilovers, without both of these my 19" wheels will look pretty shite i think.

problem is where to start and more importantly where to end. im sure i could spend this 5k coupled with the 2k of sounds in the car totalling 10k including the car and if i went to sell it the day after i finished everything to it i would probably be lucky to get 4k+

But your not doing it to make money.

You are doing it to make your ride more enjoyable.

Get the car looked at by a specialist, and have a report done on any work that may need doing.

Once its had any required work completed and been given a clean bill of health, you get start on any modifications you wish to make. Wheels tend to have the largest impact on the look of the exterior and wider wheels with quality rubber does wonders for the handlinh. Clear indications all around freshens up the look too. A nice retrim transforms the interior.

I would highly recomend a suspension overhaul (Shocks, springs, adjustable antiroll bars, and bushes.). The 300zx is very brutal on its suspension, and most zeds out there are on old own suspension, given a heavy, bloated driving feel (and trust me, that is at least how 80% of them drive, without the owners knowing the difference).

Even new standard suspension or basic upgrades make a dramatic affect and will make it a much faster car in the real world than a power increase.

Stock brakes are'nt bad if they are in good working order, unfrotunatly most are'nt with sticking caliper pistons, worn pads/discs and old fliud. A caliper overhaul, set of bremo plains and Hawk Pads are a nice upgrade for stock power.

i know its probably a bit naive but is engine work really that important. i know it is for peace of mind but isnt there a good chance that a well looked after and well serviced car will be in pretty good condition anyway? my main problem is that im not aware of a Z specialist where i am, south wales so i dont really want to take it to any old grease monkey to have the engine worked on. whereas there are plenty of people local to me who are good bodywork people

paul at bristol is your best bet. i travell nearly 70miles what would be 140mile return journey for me. and you being south wales is near bristol. get your car checked over fully before spending money to make it look nice. when zeds go wrong it can be expensive

Worst scenario is that you have a great looking car sat on the drive because a turbo or something has gone. Always worth getting the running gear checked out.

not what i wanted to hear, but i think you are all talking complete sense. i would be mighty pissed if i had a piece of metal sitting on the drive that looked the business but didnt work.

Anyone on here know what sort of money im looking at leaving the car with someone like paul to have a minor overhaul???

Having never had any engine work done i have no idea on pricing...

I do know that the cambelt service just topped £500 though

We (SWZ Performance) do a popular Winter service, which includes a Full vehicle report.

Oil & filter change, Coolant change, Fliuds check/top up plus Written vehicle report - £90.00

If vehicle has just had a recent service and your only after a checkover, then give us a call to book her in and we can put her on the Computer for diagnostics and have a look around her for you.

do i sound like a fool if i say im a little scared about getting a report done??

No just means that you really should get it done as you are not sure about the condition of the car.

For £90 it has to be worth it for peace of mind.

most definately. But with me being in wales it is a 300mile round trip to get to legrath and back. that alone is going to cost me £500 in fuel.

Not saying that should get upgrades but just make sure that the engine is sound first.

For the sake of a couple of hunred quid it has to be worth it.

Then bling as much as you can afford.

Darrell

on that note i will agree maybe worth a full service and a good checkup whats the point of a car that looks good but wont run !!!
