is it right that once changed then there ok after that. did they use metal instaed of other sort or something like that??

they go every 35k miles ish. they all go, but it can be done for less than £200!

i've never known any other problems with them tho.

K-series engine is very nice. Got some fairly good torque to it and isn't too bad on the petrol either.

Yes it's true it will eat a head gasket at some stage. But properly repaired and the plastic dowels replaced with metal ones and it will last a lot longer.

Not sure about the rest of the 25, but it looks nice enough to me.

I'd look at buying something decent. 51 plate Rover 25...so you have £2,000 roughly to spend then?

If you're doing that sort of mileage a week, then have a look at getting something like an Audi A4 TDi. Reliable, nippy, comfy and nice looking. Something that the aged old Rover 25 is not.

K series engine are great. I had a Rover 214i only 80bhp but nice lots of torque, but once you reach 50mph it's reached it's hight. Petrol consumption is very good of course and they enjoy crusing at a nice steady 70mph.

Things to look out for

The rear hinges on the back hatch as if the sill are shot they'll be rusty paint peeling etc. Check the sunroof for leaks as well. These are the two places that water can start to wreck them.

Check for oil leakage as well. If it's been driven by some race girl like me than watch out for the clutch lol. Parts ain't expensive or hard to come by even though Rover don't exist any more.

Best of luck :D

Eileen (Errrm I was an ex Rover sales girl :o )

The 1.4l K-Series is a great little engine, big power/torque per liter compared to most other engines in that class. The dreaded HGF effects the 1.8l and 2.5V6 engines much worse, the 1.4l is pretty good actually.

Check out my website for the technical nitty gritty of the problem - worth reading right through. http://www.mgfmavhh.ukf.net/

thanks for the replies guys and girl ;)

well Dave53 i read your report all the way through  went straight over my head but get the jist of i think. so the 1.4 engines arent that bad then really unless our lets drift has had hold of the car.

i know what you mean F si but i'm noy paying anywhere near £2000 for it :hyper:

I have hjust PX'd my mg ZR 1.4 and will miss it greatly. I bought it brand new and covered 42000 in it without a single problem....no head gasket not even so mucha s a squeak!!

I must add that the car was a bit of a free for all with my mates, basically everybody had a go in it and loved it. Not the quickest car in the world but its great if you rev it and fantastic round the twistys!!

Mine was quite badly treated by myself and thrashed when I was younger and braver (stupid)!! it took me on many long distance treks for fishing and managed fine with all the extra weight as well.

great cars in short.

wouldn't mind picking your brains abit more if i could

thanks graeme

My first car was a Rover Coupe 1.6 K-series, and for a little 1.6, It went like shit off a stick! Fantastic little motor. Then 3 weeks after passing my test, that f***ing a***hole shunted me when I pulled over to let a FIRE ENGINE PASS ME!!!!

I'm not bitter... No, not me! **Kicks a few things around and yells in anger**

1.4 16v vauxhall engine is more powerful though. Julia's old Corsa (2000w 1.4 sport) was 90+ bhp IIRC and would trounce the Rover ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Wouldn't have beaten mine with me driving it, off the line mate many tried and failed lol :D

Have to agree. I bought a cheap Rover with the 1.4i K-Series engine for my daily drive, and it has held up really well, despite being driven really hard everyday. Nippy and economical. Dated styling maybe, but easy to work on, and cheap to maintain.

Too bad we can't put that to the test now eh??? ;)

Still it was a good car once, but I'm pleased it has now long since been sold......

.......Julia now prefers the Rav-4 - driven hard that can embarass many a hot hatch

I had a W Reg 1.4 103 bhp 25. Great car, probably one of the quickest around. The only problem I had was a tapping noise, took it back to Rover and they said it was a design fault on that engine (new around 2000) and they replaced it, other than that can't fault it.

the clue's in the name. headgaskets, water pumps, cv's, etc etc etc. only if its very cheap.

Sorry, only just read that! I'd PM you but i'm too tight to join up properly... :wack:

email me / or post here if there's anything else I can help with. (dmonks@bigfoot.com)

Dave

i just come away from the rover scene

as mentioned above head gasket is the main thing to worry about

oh and cam belts snapping

cam belt goes ur need a new head as all the vauves would be bent

head gasket - dont think oh it will go on high milage cars as i know of 2 that the head gasket went on and they had only done 30k

apart from that general maintainance would keep it well
