taking to be plugged in on the weekend

car 5 times out of ten stalls when put into drive you can just keep it going but it surges forward as you have to rev it

drives lovely when moving

but when in Neutral only it ticks over at 2k rpm? its not a sticking throttle etc etc

Sounds like the FICD (Fast Idle Control Valve) is not working (either bad connection or faulty valve - more likely connection). Also sounds like someone has raised the base idle to try and overcome this. Do the revs pick up when you turn the aircon on? And go back down when you press the "Econ" button on the aircon control unit?

from memory yes but I can go and check

where is the FICD

would that make it almost stall in drive

Yes its there to increase the revs to stop it stalling when the box loads up. Increase should be ~150rpm...

Next to the idle valve at the rear of the pleum, passenger side. Grey connector...

found it beneath a load of other things shall have to do it later in the garage

putting the AC on doesnt seem to make the revs rise as its ticking over at 1500rpm anyway

Should still increase the revs at no throttle as it lets extra air in... Once this is sorted you need to adjust the base idle. Alfo has done a write up in the FAQ setion on that :)
