Autobox/ Torque convertor question ??

Please dont answer with suggestion of manual convertion. :)

Got 3 autoboxes now, I bought 1 box as a spare from a member of club.

Also bought 2 others from Traders on this forum.

1st box no drive whatsoever, its been in/out 3 times tried a different T/C I presume this box is ********

2nd box I put it in drove for a short time less that 200 miles never pushed it always drove tidy, It always seemed to jump alittle too quickly into 2nd gear was ok but never perfect.

I lost drive, dropped the gearbox oil was slightly contaminated, flushed it out , replaced oil it drove perfect for a mile or so then died. Could this be Torque convertor problem ??

Or is it the box ??

Cheers Martin

Oh dear, second hand auto boxes are usually disposed of for a reason ...

That aside, when you flushed out the oil did you clean the oil strainer/filter ? Were there any bits in it ?

Are you starting to see why people suggest it?

There's so much less to go wrong with a manual box, even if you love the auto like I did.

You could probably have paid for the manual conversion kit twice by now and even when you get your auto working again there's no gaurantee it will last 6 months :(

Hard to drive a manual with 1 leg ................

I was thinking about that as I typed from someones jokes the other day but I guess they were serious! :x:

Yes best stick with the auto then...

No offence intended to anyone btw :)

Autoboxes if left unused for long periods self distruct. The drive faces have clutch lining material which when the oil is not being circulated, dries out and of course starts to decompose. It will drive OK initially, but will fail later when the lining actually comes away from the driven face. That is what all the crap is stuck to the filter. If you intend to store an auot box, fill it right up with oil. If its fitted in a car, startup and move every couple of weeks.

one part of a car thats allmost impossible to clean out is the t/c, the only way really is to split em and get them welded back up with a balance, in other words a re-con unit
