Hi people,

I'm in desperate need of all your help guys and girls. I believe that there is an oil hose in the engine somewhere which is maybe blocked. Basically, a couple of weeks ago, I was out in the Z. All was going fine. Then all of a sudden, it felt as if the car lost power and I watched the turbo guage (stock) which seemed fine and the the oil guage (stock) which showed read 0 when I came to a stop and then rise a little and then go back to 0. So I pulled over straight away and checked the dipstick which showed there was nothing in there. But before getting the car on the road that day I checked the dipstick and the oil was fine. Not full but more than half. But now it was showing nothing. The car did start to run a bit rough at this time too. So I got a mate of mine who was in his car to get me some oil so I could top it up and get the car back home. I put in two litres of oil in there and checked the dipstick and still the stick didn't show me whether if there was any oil in there or not. So I started driving towards home and noticed lots of blue smoke out of my exhausts. The passenger side mainly. I got the car home and then pulled the dipstick out again and now the stick was showing that the oil level was alot higher than the high mark. Hence the smoke once I started driving back home. So I let the car cool down and come back a couple of hours later and pull the dip stick out, clean it put it back in and pull it back out and guess what, again showing no oil. But when I start it, the oil circulates and the stick shows higher oil levels. Now tomorrow is going to be my first day off work since the 21st of Jan, and the weather is gorgeous these days and would like to Z around :D . So I believe that its a hose which is maybe blocked so just wanted to know which pipes u guys think I should look at or if you think it could be anything else. If someone could be so kind and put a pic up with the pipes maybe highlighted or something, that would help me alot as I'm a bit of a novice with the hoses. Any help would be appreciated guys. Hope I've made myself clear enough here. Thanks for your time.

p.s. Hope all of you are loving your Zs.

Drop your oil out and measure how much is in there. Then refill with the correct measured amount and then check the dipstick. Now test your cars oil pressure with a mechanical test gauge screwed into the sender hole. Then if the pressure is OK replace the sender and see if the pressure is showing correctly on the dash (same as the test gauge).

I agree with previous post. In a situation like this, you have to start with a base point - and an empty sump is a good start!

A measured 4 litres should fill the engine (that's if you replace the oil filter).

Can't quite see for the life of me how a sump full of oil can dissapear and reappear on the dipstick, as there are several return drains to the sump, unless the main gallery is completely crudded up and gunky as hell inside.

ย

Either way, it sounds like you accidentally over-filled it, so I hope your seals are still ok.

Oil level must be checked with the engine NOT running. If you check it with the engne running the oil will be splashed about and read way up the stick... See the above posts, best advice you can follow :)

Not saying your wrong cos your not but, at work I can put anything upto 378 litres into an engine and the dipstick will not show, then when I dip it again its right on the full mark.

Strange but true

Thanks for that guys. I was going to start from draining it all out first and then starting from scratch. But then what confused me even more when I checked the car's oil level Monday morning, it again showed nothing in there when I had put 2 litres of oil in there when the problem occurred. (I say 2 litres on spot because I had to buy 2 1 litre bottles as the bigger ones were not available at the petrol station at the time and once this was in, the roughness of the engine went away). Then when I started the car and then checked the oil, it showed again higher than the high level on the dipstick. Anyway, I'll drain the oil out completely and refill it with the correct amount and see how it goes from there. Thanks for the advices again guys.

Don't check the level with the engine running, stop the engine and let it settle for a couple of minutes then check.
