Just thought I'd let people know what happened today. I was jacking up the front of the car (from the cross member) and just putting axle stands under the side rails. They were just about in place, but I had to get the car up just a little bit more when suddenly the jack slipped from under the cross member. Luckily for me the stands were just about in the right place, otherwise I would imagine I would have done a nice bit of damage.

I used a small woulden circle the fits in the jack and was told this would be fine, seams not. The car always seams to move slightly on the jack when I'm lifting, but I read this was normal. Does anyone have any advise that might stop this from happening again???????

Cheers,

Vijay

yep, mine does the same, ive noticed that with all trolley jacks at you get to the top end of the travel they appear to move slightly, can be a bit unnerving. then again i jacked mune up yesterday with my new 2.5 ton jack from halfords, and fuck me if the wheels diddnt sink into my tarmac drive. i now have 4 nice wheel holes in my drive, jesus how much do these cars weigh???

I tell you something Vijay mate, I know the feeling frown.gif

I tried to jack my car up on my drive and the jack wheels buried themselves too - I now only jack in the garage on solid concrete and not tarmacadam.

I also use the oem jack to lift it up a few inches, with the rear wheels well chocked then jack each side with 2 trolley jacks then use two axle stands on the cross member.

Its fucking scary under a zed!

I hate jacking them up, very scarey as the car moves all over the place.

Was up at Demon Tweeks a few weeks back and saw this pukka trolley jack next to a Scooby on show in the showroom...I'll have that sexy mother I thought! Errrrr, not at 658 squids I won't then! LOL biggrin.gif

Steve, I agree bud, I want a 3 tonner as my 2 tonne jobby struggles to lift the lard arse Z fat mobile! wink.gif

I'm gonna go for this 3 tonne low entry trolley jack I've seen for about 100 squids.

Not much you can do Vij as the Z is sooooo lardy it's gonna move no matter what! Scissor jack is probably a bit safer but a trolley will never be beaten.

I spoke to a 300 mechanic tonight and mentioned this and he said it more to do with the fact that the car is so f'in heavy. He said the safest way of jacking the car was from the side rails and then supporting by axle stands on the cross members. It'll take more time, but after today I don't think I'm gonna risk it slipping again.

yeah, at 9.30 tonight I took it for a test drive. I've been told I need to bed them in for around 500 miles though.

Speak to you soon and cheers for all the help bud.

Just did my brakes recently and found the only way to get the jack under the cross member was to first drive the car up onto two bricks, jack went under fine after that.

The rear was not so easy, could not get both sides up at the same time but the brick method worked one side at a time.

The secret i've used each time to jack the front up, is to put the jack on two large paving slabs - so its on a nice flat surface, THEN (before jacking) make sure the wheels are pointing lengthways along the direction of the car. That way the jack will roll backwards (away from you) when you're jacking.

O yeah - before I can fit the jack under the car (with two slabs) I need to park up on some blocks first to raise the height of the car.

hmm maybe its just as well our trolley jack wont fit under the car, if it needs lifting up it goes to the garage and put up on the lift much easier/safer biggrin.gif
