Fan Belt change

Hi All,

After a bit of sqeeling my fanbelt finaly snapped. How easy is it to change? as far as i can see the fan must be removed along with the other belts then replaced in reverse order?

Any help appreciated.

The fan shroud unclips so the top section comes out then the fan just unbolts from the pulley with 4 small nuts on the front of it.

Then it's a case of taking the other belts off so you'll probably have to get under the car and slacken off the alternator and the pulley tensioner for the aircon and power steering.

Pretty simple to do really.

Thank you. Just one issue now how do i move the power steering pump to take the belt of. I have slackened the adjustster and cannot see how to move the pump. Any ideas?

Rotate the pulley until you can see the 14mm mounting bolt at the top through the hole..

is the bolt just above the alternater bolt (if you are under the car)? i think i saw that and was not too sure if that removed the whole unit.

Its right behind the PS pulley, at about 2 o'clock ish...

aha, have the bugger.... :smash: Might get the job done now thanks for all your help.

OK I have loosened the bolt027 and still cant move. The only other bolt i can see that may help is 028 any ideas?

Greg sent this to me, helped me loads

air con belt.. slacken 14mm nut on front of ajustment pully, directly underneath there is a 12mm bolt, you need to have the car up to see it properly. Undo until pully wheel moves up this will then loosen the belt and can be removed with ease, replace the same way making sure the belt has sufficant tension

P.S belt.. loosen 12mm ajuster nut on front of bracket, turn the crank around via pully 27mm socket required! So you can see the 14mm bolt through the centre of the power steering pump just loosen this slightly, from underneath the car look up and you will see a 12mm ajuster bolt loosen this right off now squeeze belt so it loosens, it may be tight so a pry bar in between PS pump and power steering bracket to move pump over enough to remove belt.

alternator.. underneath slacken 12mm nut on back of alternator bracket, top of alternator there is a 17mm bolt loosen but dont remove, now back at bottom of alternator there is again a 12mm bolt loosen off a fair bit and knock alternator over so there is enough room to remove belt

HTH greg

time taken - 4 1/2hrs to get it off, 1hr to put it back together (and i have an engineering degree)

I have a engineering HND and this is frustrating me!!! The Alternator and the air con belt were easy but i have spent near 3 hrs with the PS belt. I have to say this is the worst DIY car i have worked on....but its near done, my back hurts my hands are numb and cut to shreads i have smoked nearly 40 fags from yeaturday and its all worth it. Now i know why my garage was going to charge me £80 labour to do..

Thanks for your help anyhow i can now see a bit of movement in the belt so may be a spring compressor may work the rest of the way.

Just turn the bottom pulley with a 27mm wrench while pulling the belt forwards - it will slowly 'roll' off the pulley then you're sorted. Same goes for refitting...

  • 2 weeks later...

Completed the job :mac1: . all the advise i was given, thank you. This is in the end how the story went....

1, Remove top water to radiator hose (so you can get at the damn bolt underneath)

2, Remove the 4 bolts holding the fan casing in and remove fan casing (comes apart in 2 pieces) (10 mm)

3, Remove the 4 bolts holding the fan on (10mm), remove fan.

aha now we have space to work  for the remaing jobs i recomend a light, 2 x 2ton min axle stands and 2 ton trolley jack. and a ton of deep heat, it hurts!!!

Underneath

4, undo the adjuster for the Air con pump (12mm) then slacken the pully and push North (14mm), remove bellt

5, Undo the adjuster for the alternator (12mm) and slacken alternator (13mm) move alternator and remove belt.

6, Undo the adjuster for the power stearing pump (12mm) turn the crankshaft (27mm) untill you see the 14mm bolt at around 1pm. slacken bolt. If the pump is hard to move try a pry bar or turn the crank whilst rolling the belt of.

Fitting is reverse and i cannot guarantee that all the sizes are correct, but its the ones i used. Total time should be around 1hr each way (and if you were me 4.5 hrs to get the damn stuff off)

Hope this helps someone else and their troubles.

Regards
