There is a rattling noise from the engine when you accelerate.

A website tells me these could be the causes

Possible causes:

The ignition timing may be set wrong: Adjust ignition timing.

The engine may be running too hot: Check and repair cooling system.

There may be a vacuum leak: Check and replace vacuum lines as required.

Incorrect grade of fuel: Fill with the correct, or higher, octane fuel.

There is an excessive amount of carbon built up in your engine: Clean carbon from valves and combustion chamber. (Not a DIY job)

There may be a fault in the computerized engine control system: Check engine control systems with a scan tool. Test circuits and repair or replace components as required. (Generally not a DIY job)

This is the same noise I got right before my Toyota Carina broke down a few weeks ago and since then my mechcanic tells me I need a replacement engine for that car :(

Will I need a new engine ?

Diagnosing noises is very tricky over a forum. It all depends on what sort of rattling you can hear....it could be pinking/detonation.....big end bearings.....cam rattle.....or just a loose heatshield.... Get the car to a good garage asap.....preferably have somebody come examine the car without you having to drive it.

Cheers will do.

Are you turbo'd, does it only happen in high RPM. Does it sounds like little rocks being shaken in a can? If so... it's called pinging (detonation). If not reseloved, will destroy your engine.

I'd go with that. Could be just about anything from the description. If you o take it somewhere, take it somewhere SLOWLY and off boost

I dont have turbos, will they have to open up the engine to take a look at it and it does happen at high revs :(

and to be honest I only seen the oil like turn on this morning :(

Ya I will do, I dont have a turbo

Oil light turn on?

I presume you've got oil in it???

If it's low on oil it will be noisy and might just need a top up.

if its low on oil and noisy its probably to late, as wear has happend already

if its bottom end it will more likely bearings

if its top end lifters/followers, more likely this as the topend will suffer first, being furthest away from the pump!

Hi, I just topped it up with oil and let it run for a while...

Then took it for a drive and I still get the Noise :(

Usually an oil light comes on when there is little or no oil pressure.

If this is the case it might have done damage already to the big ends...

I had the same prob in my S13... seemed to clank harder at 3k upwards, but got away with polishing crank and fitting new shells thanks to the tufftrided/nitrided crank

Yes thats exactly it anything over 3000 revs and it click really fast,

was what you say involve alot of work, when you say

"polishing crank and fitting new shells thanks to the tufftrided/nitrided crank"

Engine out job unfortunatley since you'll have to remove the crank and have it inspected. VG30 engine doesn't stand up very well to big ends going :(

you can remove the crank in situ, but not much fun :( i know!

needs two of you and to be honest not worth the hassle of it failing prematurly.

Absolutely no point at all in removing it in situ. Just makes a pain in the arse job even more of a pain in the arse. Forget that thought :D

You're right but do we know if he has got a VG30 engine? His avatar implies he's got a Z31 not a Z32

Z31 still had VG30 ;)
