I am seriously considering..........

sdsgif.gif

But they'd have to be 90 degs, or it wouldn't be worth it.

Now I know that threads have been posted about all this in the past, and some members get a little passionate about which ones are the best ;) (so I don't want all that, I've read it all before) What I would like is serious comments on whether you think it would suit Eliza, considering she is basically standard and not really your normal stand-out-from-the-crowd type Zed...................

dont do it!

i think they only look ok on seriously modded show car types.

yours is just perfect the way it is!

to be honest - if you did something like that - it would look good if you had 'modern' wheels on IMHO... otherwise might look a bit naf... (no offence)

standard looks good on standard ;)

if u start modding - best do it all, rather than bits

what long term effect do the have on the pillor and do the doors shut properly? guess it depends if your going to keep the car for good as they might not be everyones cup of char and it might not sell so easily?

 go for it dave im considering the idea myself but again ive seen some kits that go higher than others so im open to comments aswell mate !! theres some pics on the z centre of a light blue car with real high ones but the ones luke has on his car are lower??

maybe i will ring and ask him

The low ones, as in the little image in my first post, are a pain in the arse to get into and out of, but now they seem to have developed the full 90 degree opening type (fully up) This would be the only version I'd go for if I did it.

As for any strain on the A pillar, cant really see there being any. The swivel hinge (or retrohelix, as Nick called it ;) ) is fully supported on both original door mounting points, also there is the single (or on some kits double) hydrualic dampers that take the starin as well.

Do it, and on a standard car, it doesnt detract from anything, as the car still looks the same. If it doesnt take too much cutting on the inner wings to fit the hinges...i'm not a big fan of cutting away at our precious cars... I'd do it, if there wasnt a mountain of things I have yet to fit already! Suits the zed down to the ground, even standard ones.

If the zed had scissor doors as standard, our cars would probably still be worth 10 grand...

Dave,

Posted up a few weeks ago on my old Zed, that has a wide arse and other things going on at it ,as we speak.

GT was the make he went for, due to PK`s advice.

Full link here, but heres a photo to whet your appetite !!

Stewart and myself work in the same bodyshop.

Arr I remember now, knew I'd seen it somewhere the other day :D

I see they arn't fully 90 degs though, but not as low as soom. Whats it like getting in and out? Do the doors wobble while going up/fully up?

Cheers bud

I am 6ft 1 and a right stiff old coont, and I can get in and out no bother.

Dont wobble in operation, but thats why he went for GT ones, best there is ! :) Twin gas shocks makes the effort of lifting the door easy.

They do not attach to the pillar !! So no unsightly mess !!

Thet get cut into, and sunk into the inner wings, without disturbing the Valves under the wings !! 4 points of adjustment on each hinge.

They really are a superb piece of kit !! At almost £900, they should be !!

So they don't mount to the original hinge fixing points? Arn't you left with six holes into your interior though?

£900, I was expecting up to £1000 so would be within what I was expecting :D

Still very much undecided though, I'd really like to see one in the flesh and give it a good testing to see if I could live with it.

Or I could just stop spending huge sums of money on her :D

As a rough guide,

You remove the wing, cut off your top hinge, fook about for ages trying to work out where to cut the inner wings ;) And it all sorts of fits into place.

You can either put bolts back into the original hinge holes, or weld them up and flush them off. If you are a competent welder, then it actually looks a tidy job. Its not a 2 minute job tho ! :nono:

No sweat Dave,

Will post up a few pics when it is finished !

Alan............

You should go for it dave, they look awesome.

Me, Alan and one of the other guys in our work had to fUk about a bit to get them fitting perfectly but wasn't too difficult, just a bit time consuming and as for your thoughts on 90 degrees, the GT factory kit is 90 degrees but you can adjust it to whatever height you want the doors to open, i just thought they looked better if they weren't up to the full 90degrees. You can also adjust how far out you want the door to open before it goes up so getting in and out aint a problem.

Please Dave...I really like your Z...don't do it to her! :(

The only time I'd go for a door modification is if someone figured out decent aftermarket double synchro helix door actuation (since we're getting technical Nick...:D ;)).

In otherwords "Koenigsegg-style" doors. I was following the progress of a chap on t'interweb that was hoping to make them and even asked a friend of mine (ex Rover engineer and general big-brain) to look into developing one a while back with the info collected, but the work involved was astronomical and it never got off the ground.

Please don't.

Only my opinion though...if you like it, do it! :D
