...and i'm not giving to much away but i've figured out a way to give my car something completely unique and possibly market it afterwards.

Was thinking of how to update the rear lights, looked at the venom 3 pots etc but i don't know if they'd suit my car.

So was thinking if i could update the technology of the present light cluster without touching the lovely oval slits across the back.

I'll keep you posted but should be relatively simple i just have to work out the pcb for the boards it'll need.

Basic idea is to completely remove the diffusers and use LED technology to replace all the clusters (rear lights, brake lights, indicators, fogs and reverse lights) and create a sculpted 3D light, sort of like the old jag s - type rear lights

Updates and photos to come soon....

Sounds interesting mate.... can't wait to see the finished thing.

Well Eileen's other half David has a bag of these multicoloured leds that respond to different voltage on each leg to product any colour under the sun and i was thinking that means i could have the whole bank lit up for normal lights, have say 4 rings inside each other react to each input so:

All four rings on for normal rear lights,

Brakes come on, whole thing lights up extra bright

Indicators come on, whole panel reacts and flashes between red and orange

Brakes come on while indicating, middle section glows bright red, outer two rings continue to cycle between bright red and orange

Reverse comes on, both top sections light up bright white aiding reversing by lighting up behind the car.

Fog lights could light up the lower sections permanently brightly and pulse when the brakes go on to increase awareness of the car braking in the fog.

The possibilities are endless and the whole tailsection could appear completely clear until the lights are activated with a cool mirrored chrome paint finish inside or painted black to give a stealth look

You will have to make sure that they are legal. I seem to remeber someone coming up with something similar once on some TV show but it was turned down by the DVLA.

Nice thought though and I would probably have a set off you once you have ironed out all the bugs.

Hi Nick...

Great minds mate ;)

Currently working on a similar path using LED's in the rear clusters (similar to clearcorners.com)

But I'm trying to get one project at a time sorted, currently working inside :D

But if anyone wants to get rid of an old rear lamp unit, that otherwise wouldn't be saleable (due to too many scratches etc) I'll have it off you. As I don't need it to be used in the end, just for experimentation, afterwards it'll be scraped. Thank you.

It's already been done Nick if this is what you're thinking.

They don't look that different to standard.

I guess they are a bit better - but it's a lot of work for a small difference.

You can't tell through photos. LED lights in real life look really slick!

Nonono not like that, i'm talking about actually removing the diffuser inside so the unit is just using the glass/plastic on the outside. and you have a chromed inside with the leds.

I'll try and knock up some sort of photoshop when i have the time. My tax return is taking up a shed load of it at the moment

Reckon that could look a little too home-made? I dunno...good luck with it though.

Get an accountant!

I went self employed a little over a year ago and an accountant more than pays for themselves in what they save you.

Plus they do all the forms.
